Mumbai, March 2 PJ Hindu Gymkhana shocked favourites Shivaji Park Youngsters to clinch the title in the inaugural Bombay Gymkhana-Tata Sky Twenty20 Inter Club Cricket Tournament, at the Bombay Gymkhana on Sunday.

Electing to field after winning the toss, Shivaji Park Youngsters skittled out PJ Hindu Gymkhana for a modest 151 in 18.5 overs to set themselves up for a golden opportunity for victory in an exciting, low scoring final.

Tight fielding and economic spells by Gautam Yadav (2-30) and Bharat Karnik (2-30) kept PJ Hindu Gymkhana in check and enhanced SPY’s hopes of a win, even as Ajay Kadam missed a half century by five runs.

But SPY endured an early setback as they lost four wickets for just 36 runs with Mohd. Sheikh swinging the match in PJ Hindu Gymkhana’s favour with two wickets in his second over and the fourth of the innings. Sheikh was finally rewarded with four wickets for 22 runs.

SPY, reduced to 63 for 7 at the half way stage, never recovered and crashed 17 runs short of the total, with ‘Best bowler’ and ‘Player of the Tournament’ Nitin Surve snaring three for 21 and Arun Shetty snatching two for 20.

Chief guest former India captain Ajit Wadekar presented PJ Hindu Gymkhana the winners’ prize of Rs. 50,000 and a trophy, while Shivaji Park Youngsters received Rs. 25,000.

Brief scores: PJ Hindu Gym 151 all out in 18.5 overs (Ajay Kadam 45, Ashok Kadam 35; Gautam Yadav 2-30, Bharat Karnik 2-30) bt Shivaji Park Youngsters 134 for 9 in 20 overs (Gautam Yadav 28 n.o., Rohit Rudra 18, Bharat Karnik 17; Mohd. Sheikh 4-22, Nitin Surve 3-21, Arun Shetty 2-20) by 17 runs. Player of the Tournament: Nitin Surve (PJ Hindu Gymkhana); Best Batsman: Vinayak Mane (Shivaji Park Youngsters); Best Bowler: Nitin Surve (PJ Hindu Gymkhana).
