Ghaziabad BJP chief Rajnath Singh on Thursday indicated his discomfort with the idea of Narendra Modi as Prime Minister.

When asked about surveys that claimed the Gujarat chief minister was the most popular leader in the BJP, Rajnath said: “According to a nationwide survey he may have been the most popular leader of the party. But remember, the survey was done in 2004. And our party lost in those elections and we were unable to form the government. I am not in a position to say anything more.”

Asked if he would like to be the NDA’s prime ministerial candidate, Rajnath said, “Ram Ram”.

LK Advani, he said, was the BJP’s unanimous choice to be leader of the party and the alliance.

On his former BJP colleague Kalyan Singh, Rajnath said: “Kalyan Singh is no factor in these general elections for the party. He came, he stayed and he left. I pray to God that wherever he is, he should lead happy life.”

Rajnath said the BJP was not considering any pre-poll alliance with the Samajwadi Party or Bahujan Samaj Party. “Samajwadi Party offered us an alliance on the condition that we should leave the issue of Ram Mandir. But we refused all offers of alliances with either SP, BSP or with Congress,” Singh said.

The Ram temple issue, Singh iterated, was still central to the BJP’s ideology. “Our faith is Lord Ram is unshakeable and we are committed to building the Ram temple in Ayodhya,” he said.

Modi.... wah..wah by eshaana on 24 Feb 2009

Modi,You talk of experience as your measure stick! I congratulate you, since you are teling us it is maturity and applaudable to leave your wife and claim to be a bachlor, illegimate relationships with Anandi, your consort minister, gain popularity based on provoking issues based on caste, and change your ideals based on your games of power . You show humbleness by going to a mosque while promoting 'gujarat choodo' for all non-gujratis settled there for generations and strategising uprrotong of muslims from GUJARAT.You sure have a good history of your past for others to follow. There is fear, and a false joy in the streets today than what was there before your were there on the screen of politics in Ahmedabad, gujarat and Gandhinagar. The terror in the eyes today is towars you, and sure your fans are being shaped into LTTE AND THE TALIBAN of the future. If someone was to read the minds of intellect and hardworking common man in gujarat...it would be" god, when will this tyrann

Why BJP lost on 2004? by Jayakar Hejmady on 20 Feb 2009

Mr. Rajnath, BJP lost 2004 election solely because of Pramod Mahajan. He lead the BJP's so called high tech compaign with "Indian shining" slogan. Also, his name was cropping up in the murder of Indian Express journalist Bhatnagar. He was very corrupt. Guy with such a bad image led your paty's compaign.

Modi the Only Hope....Only Hope by Bamboy on 20 Feb 2009

To correct the decade old problems of India we want a spell of autocratic rule and only Modi can do that. Severly punish those who are anti-national irrespective of caste and religion and slay those people who are anti-Indian. So, only anti-Indians should be fearful of Modi.

Country has to choose between KARMA YOGI and VANSH BHOGI by SP on 20 Feb 2009

It seems news like this are only available with The Indian Express and the way it has been presented, forces one to believe that English media is anti-BJP. In a democrasy it is not wrong if some one aspiers to become CM or PM because that is what democrasy is all about but in some Parties the exclusive right is only with a particular individual or family which is not in spirit of democracy. The media should rather focus on that subject. Eventually the Country has to choose between KARMA YOGI and VANSH BHOGI. as our PM.

Don't twist statements by Biswanath on 20 Feb 2009

Its a good creation by this news paper where none exists. When BJP and NDA have unanimously decided that shri L K Advani is its PM candudate why media everytime tries to put word into the mouth of leaders and then claim that there is difference of opinion in BJP. Everyone knows that it is the BJP alone where any leader aspire to lead the party and the country as in other parties the top posts are reserved for family members. By saying everytime that Modi is the most popular leader, it is the media which is contradicting itself which tried everybit to attack Modi but today you say Modi is popular but tomorrow you have to say Rajnath is popular, Arun Jaitley is popular, Sushma Swaraj is popular and finally BJP is popular. This shows the mood of the nation that No 2, 3, 4, 5 in BJP are enough to defeat the Congress and imagine when the No. 1 Advani is in the race what will happen to Congress Party. It will be descimated across India in the absence of any leader but only dealers.

BJP by Rajan on 20 Feb 2009

Friend, I support BJP too. But be realistic. By it own acounts through an internal survey, BJP itsself believes it will not get more than 140. So try to be realistic and do not indulge in wihful thinking.

Unfit to be President by Arun Kumar on 20 Feb 2009

In politics there is no room for a personal view aired through media. Rajnath ji please speak less, or let some one else do the job - work more - your party is hope for millions inside and outside India.

Rajnath ji - beawre it may boomrang by Arun Kumar on 20 Feb 2009

Very sad that a party president wastes his words and make comment on his colleague in media. If BJP has to perform it should line such people who are not easily provoked to make uselss statements. There is a difference in being a Netaji and President of a National Party - please do not forget this difference Rajnath ji.

A PARTY OF DIFFERENCES by R Sundar on 20 Feb 2009

Despite all claims of putting up a united front before the lok sabha elections, all is not well with the BJP and its enlarged wing the NDA. There is a constant friction between the second line leaders of the Party and on the alliance nothing is going well and even in Maharasthara it seems it is going to be a hard deal with the Shiv Sena. In Bihar and Orissa, the JDU and Biju Janata Dal are not willing to part way with many seats to the BJP as they see it as not powerful as it was before. Comparing this with the big alliance of the UPA, one gets an impression even in the beginning that the election result of the coming Lok Sabha election is a foregone conclusion what with BJP having just five dependable allies and three are quarelling with it

RAM TEMPLE by MENON/KV on 20 Feb 2009

NO HINDU IS EVER GOING TO TAKE HYPE OF BELIEVING THAT THE BJP WILL EVER BUILD THE RAM TEMPLE. THEY HAD AMPLE TIME DURING THEIR RULE. DURING THE LAST STAGES THEY WERE GOING AFTER THE MUSLIM VOTES. THEY HAVE LOST THECREDIBILITY WITH THE MAJORITY OF HINDUS, THAT IS THEY LOST THE LAST ELECTIONS VERY BADLY.

Speak Carefully by govind on 20 Feb 2009

BJP chief Rajnath Singh must take caution while uttering anything. Its high political time and opposition is looking for a chance to undermine. The statement made by BJP chief will create fresh internal tension between political members. Instead of using raw statement why doesn’t Rajnath Singh use diplomatic answers for replying? And one more thing LK Advani remain the Prime Ministerial candidate so it is useless to speak on these type of question.

Be carefull while you utter anything by Govind on 20 Feb 2009

BJP chief Rajnath Singh must be take caution while replying these type of question. This is a time for election and these statement can be tossed up by opposition parties. All of them are the member of same party and its their responsibility to handle these types trivial issues carefully. It's undoubted that LK Advani is the Prime Ministerial candidate and if anything commented on this subject will give bad face to BJP.
