Releasing the Congress manifesto for 2009 Lok Sabha polls along with party President Sonia Gandhi, he termed BJP's defence of Varun Gandhi's comments with communal overtone as shameful.
He said Left parties and BJP have "negative mindset" which cannot take the nation forward.
NDA and Third Front do not have the capacity to meet the challenges facing the nation, Singh said.
He reminded the people of the "historic opportunity" to decide the path they would like to follow in the next five year.
The Prime Minister said if the country had a strong and purposeful government, "India can be a source of inspiration to rebuild more prosperous and more equitable South Asia".
The Prime Minister expressed anguish over the instability in neighbouring countries. "If I look at the challenges around India, I see instability," he said.
He said Pakistan was facing terrorism and pointed out at events in neighbouring Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
"These are all events which cause worry about future of South Asia," he said.
The Prime Minister said the Congress President has explained why it was necessary for the party to come back to power to meet the enormous challenges the country faced.
"When I look at the opportunities, I am convinced that this country can move forward on road to faster growth", he said, adding the benefits of developments can be passed on to each sections of society particularly scheduled castes, scheduled tribes and minorities.
He said under Gandhi's leadership, the UPA has worked tirelessly to fulfil the promises made in the Common Minimum Programme and the Congress manifesto.
Referring to the Mumbai terror strikes, the Prime Minister said the attackers were from Pakistan and hoped Islamabad would take steps to punish guilty.
"We still believe that diplomacy should be given a chance," he said adding that no purpose would be served by creating a war hysteria.
The Prime Minister said diplomatic efforts have succeeded and for the first time Pakistan has admitted that its citizen was involved in the horrible act.
"I can't say we are fully satisfied with actions taken by Pakistan in connection with Mumbai attacks," he said adding that Pakistan must take next consequential steps to ensure perpetrators of Mumbai attacks are brought to justice.
To question as to who was the main adversary of the Congress in the ensuing polls -- BJP or the Third Front – he said in politics all adversaries should be taken seriously.
"But we are prepared to meet the challenges both right as well as the Left," he said, adding communalism was the greatest challenge. "If we do not roll back communal forces, India's unity, integrity and prosperity will be in danger".

PM elected by whom. By the Billion People of democratic India or by less than 150 people controlled by selfish motives. A PM cannot be strong If he/she is not elected by the People of that country.

BJP spokesperson Ravi rightly said that Dr. Mammohan Singh doesn't match with Advani. Dr. Singh would not demolish Babri Masjid and create communal problems. Advani's specialty is to initiate communal issues. Dr. Manmohan Singh would never praise Muhammad Ali Jinah unlike Advani did. Dr. Singh would never support Gujarat riots and massacre of 2002 but Advani supported Modi for failing in potecting ciitizens of the state. Advani is a great communal guy and Dr Singh can never be communal and partial to any group or community. Advani is a very controversial person in Indian politics as well as in his own party. Advani, an old guy of 83 should stop dreaming of becoming PM and should control his power hunger. He is a very poor administrator as he failed to protect people of India when terrorists attacked the Indian Parliament, and it was really a fiasco when the Indian Airlines plane was hijacked. It is a big shame on BJP and the darkest part of Indian history. Dr. Singh is a gentlemen.
It is funny how this gr8 Congress party handles it's affairs. Pitiably, none of them who matters does not realise that it is one's achievement that counts at the end, not the shortcomings if any, of your adversaries. What Congress is really made up of we all have seen recently during the worst times needing crucial leadership. The sikh riots of 1964. 4. The numerous communal riots the worst of which was in 1970 in GUJARATwhere more than 3000 persons were killed. 5. The Bofors Kickbacks by a "model" PM. 6.At least three unprincipled change of Central Govts between 1990 to 1997. YSR is busy in promoting his religion in AP. That is the main reason why Sonia did not sack him so far inspite of strong pressures from Telangana. The only progress made in AP under YSR is doubling the christian population and tripling the missionery activities. There is no BJP in AP for the last 50 yrs. It is the UPA govt at the centre and at the states who are dividing the country on communal basis. How can you say that the resoures of the country belongs to muslims and christians. As hindus how much insult we can bear. You say you are following secularism. All hindu organisation are communal. But christian organisation are all secular. All muslim organisations are said to be secular. In Kerala, PDP who were recruiting people for terrorist activities were called secular. Their volunteers conducted training camps for terrorist activities. They made bombs and distributed throughout the country and yet they are secular. But BJP says let the poor people improve, but you call them communal. What nonsense is this?

India only be free when leadership that feeds on some weird ideas of secularism,take the people for a ride and continue their inexorable exploitation of people are stopped.Indian politicians largely with deeply ingrained attitudes handed over by the Raj have some misguided idea that so called Hindus have committed a sin by asking to be treated with respect in relation to their heritage and traditions which in reality are for all South Asians to cherish. There are some weaknesses but then the traditions and values of India have gone through transformation despite so much hate and poison spread by invading cultures. The only way for communal forces to be rolled would be to empower every single Indian as to their heritage and specifically highlight how the host culture has accommodated invading cultures and cheated in the process. The idea that by appeasing the so called minorities who are bent on rigidity and intolerance will attain harmony is foolish.ALL Indians need to wake up.
