New Delhi, February 15: Taking a dig at the previous NDA regime, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday said its economic programmes were not focused as it was preoccupied with divisive agenda.

"The governments of the day (1997-2002) were unable to inspire. They were preoccupied with divisive agendas and their economic agenda was not sufficiently focused," he said at the annual general meeting of industry chamber Ficci in New Delhi.

Without directly naming NDA, the Prime Minister also accused the previous regime of not making any attempts "to make our growth more broad-based and inclusive."

Pointing out that early 1990s also witnessed economic optimism, he said the dynamism was not sustained as after three years of more than seven per cent economic growth rate between 1992 and 1997, the economy slowed down considerably.

During the ninth Plan period, between 1997-2002, the growth rate declined to 5.5 per cent.

The UPA government, the Prime Minister said, has tried to maintain an environment conducive to enterprise and creativity so that "we do not choke off essential growth processes which are so essential for meeting our social and national goals".

He further said there is an underlying dynamism in our economy which is translating into more employment, higher revenues and also into lower poverty and better standards of living.

Stating that investment is an act of faith, Singh said, "Investors and industry are delivering an overwhelming vote of confidence in favour of India."

" India is Minority by Bharath on 16 Feb 2008

Reservation – cheap and dirty politicsCongress has no national interestReservation – cheap and dirty politics – when reservation policy was made it was intended to be phased out after few years, but congress does not seem to understand and want ony votes. Now Kerala, Karnataka, Assam will follow the same suit and doom India’s economy. When you give an option people will become more lazy and will demand more and more concessions. All congress is interested in vote bank and to hell with progress, national integrity. The majority should wake up and teach congress a lesson for neglecting them!!!

Golden Quadrilaterla slowed after COngress took power by kumar on 16 Feb 2008

Then Congress should accept that their misinformation to route out NDA in the LokSabha polls despite their good and clean governance. Congress kept on misinforming about Babri mosque, Godhra and Tehelka forgetting Sikh massacre, Bofors scandal. This is bloody Indian democracy and secular parties Now people are awake and boot out Congress who are now thinking of even reserving Bank loans for Muslims!!!!!

Hyde Act is a hog wash and does nut much ice. by DILIP/FRANCE on 16 Feb 2008

These are the signs of a desperate and a frustrated P.M. who is a suurogate if a mafia don. He has become so subjugated that he even has to ask for permission to go to toilet. As to the axe grinder of Hyde Act,there is a wide gulf between political rhetoric, public consumption and ground reality. China is becoming a major threat to USA,startegic interest, recently Pentagon arrrested to spies, one in the Penatgon and otehr in the Boeing defence industry, involved in espionage activities for China.based on this back drop no USA GOVT will dare to invoke Hyde Act on India,Hyde Act, is a red hearring and a distraction. The truth, for india's energy security, she needs as much nuclear energy as she can generate. The economic cycle and the dynamic that is prevailing in India was the Grand and selective design of the BJP, whose fruits the Congress is benefiting. It does not matter how much you rant, the facts are facts.

Temple by PSW on 16 Feb 2008

There is the point that is worth eloberating. Building Temples, churches and synagogues, human race survived for few millinea and Mr. Peter, the development based agenda that mankind has pursued with vigour in the 20th century has brought comfort and happiness to billions of men but which threatens to finish very life from Earth in few decades. It is time for the human race to slow down, introspect, save the environment and medidate as to why and how our race survived on Religion for a millenia and some faith and why we are in danger.

UPA the boot is on your leg! by mandookraj on 16 Feb 2008

It is in fact the UPA which is following consistently the divisive policy, by the PM himself shamelessly declaring that the Minorities have the first claim on the Nation's wealth and progress. It is a pity that the PM has stooped to such low level of politics.

What a farce ! by withheld on 16 Feb 2008

UPA is sufficiently focussed, only to deceive the Indian public it would seem when one compares what Dr. Sing and co say about the nuclear deal and what the US says about it. US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice recently told the House International Relations Committee: "We will support nothing with India in the NSG that is in contradiction to Hyde Act. It will have to be completely consistent with the obligations of Hyde Act." UPA spin masters maintain that the Hyde Act is internal US law and not binding on India, which is only concerned with the 123 pact, while the US administration has said consistently that the 123 agreement is in consonance with the Hyde Act. And it is the legal position too. Very braod-based and inclusive indeed.

Manmohan Singh is BJP PM by Vidhur on 16 Feb 2008

Shri Manmohan Singh: We the nationalists and patriots (including BJP) made you the PM. Could you imagine to become PM, had we not thwart the Italian mafia? And in last three years, you could only criticise BJP and nationalist Hindus. You have no guts to speak one word against your Congressi chors, criminals, mafias, religious reservationalist, Christian haj subsidies and list goes endless. You are a cunning, selfish and disgusting person, you lowered the nation's image by being a puppet to Italian womans hand. WHy did you got PhD degree and a professorship? Do you think you qualify? I wil rate you must below than a slave of the colonial era.

dont be stupid MMS by Prabhu on 16 Feb 2008

its hard to believe that a man like Manmohan sing accusing BJP!!! Sonia's puppet, dancing doll, MMS should have been more cautious before making such public statement. Is Sonia behind this? BJP in its short rule did great progress and also let the world know that we are nuclear capable on our own which congress in its rule since day one of independence could not do. BRAVO BJP. There is lot to learn from them congress...dont forget

NDA Divisive Agenda by V. Kumar on 15 Feb 2008

PM Manmohan Singh should speak of Congress's record of 50 years of misrule. We lost thousands of Sq Kms of land to China in 1962 war and lost 1/3 of Kashmir to Pak under Nehru. Congress is unable to protect India from external threat. We have lost tons of money because of foolish policies of Congress which believes in quota system based cast, religion. They cann't imagine to remain out-of-power for a day even. They can join hands with communists to remain in power. Let Congress be made accountable and recover our land from China and Pak. Indians have suffered enough under this Congress dynasty.

Inclusiveness as a smoke screen by Ramesh on 15 Feb 2008

The UPA's so-called 'Inclusiveness' is nothing more than a euphemism for caste-based 'quotas'. And in every 'inclusive' scheme, there is exclusiveness because it segregates and leaves a section of the Indian society all in the name of a mirage called 'Social Justice'.

Loose talks and promises! by Kamini Asgarali on 15 Feb 2008

With what face Manmohansingh is talking after all his nonsentic talk in Gujrat and HP elections and that of his Mistress and her son boomeranged on thier party.Such foolish talks the Congress P:arty has to come out with concrete programes and not indulge in baseless talks.Enough is enough for p;eople to accept such accusations as indulged in by Sonia's apron holder.

Manmohan's statement by Prem Kumar on 15 Feb 2008

This can stand as the all time greatest fib. I recall hearing a titbit in oen of the news channels that soem one was organisning the Great Fib contest. Dr. is assured to win atleast this one contest. Allocating relgion based resoiruces is not divisivePrioritising people on religion is not devisive.Asking for Cast certificates for every job in the country and then prefering the pet voters is not devisive.Promoting and funding reliogious trips of pet religious people is not devisive. How ever if you ask for Uniform law for all citizens it becomes Devisive. If you ask for abolition of funding for religion based trips it is DevisiveIf you say you are proud to be Indian and India you are devisive.
