Nawanshahr, January 13 Alarmed by the drug abuse in the state, the Punjab State Human Rights Commission (PSHRC) has directed the Punjab Police chief to check the menace with an iron hand.

Parvinder Singh Kittna of Nawanshahr-based NGO Help had complained to the PSHRC on November 28, 2007, that as per a media report, some well-connected, established and political persons had close relations with smugglers, and some police officials were also allegedly involved in this business. He said the report also said that 70 per cent of the state’s youths were addicted to drugs. He had also attached newspaper clippings with the complaint.

“I also appealed to the commission to look into matter and direct the police to take necessary action,” added Kittna.

Acting on the complaint, the PSHRC has told the Punjab DGP that it was the primary duty of the state to ensure that all sources of drugs smuggling were plugged.

The order also added that copy of newspaper clippings have been sent to the DGP to examine the contents and take appropriate action.
