Representatives of the West Bengal Primary Teachers Training Students Union (WBPTTSU) and the Chhatra Bloc (students’ wing of the Forward Bloc) had assembled at the chairman’s office in Salt Lake at 1 pm today.
Inspector-in-Charge of Bidhannagar East police station Madan Pal said two students — Partha Chatterjee and Saswat Bhattacharya — had been arrested for ransacking the office.
WBPTTSU general secretary Pintu Parui said the security personnel and staff had tried to misbehave with them. “We demand that the government take action to end the stalemate as soon as possible. Otherwise we will hold a statewide road blockade on January 7,” said Parui.
In early 2006, Tulsi Bakshi had filed a public interest litigation alleging that a large number of PTTIs in the state were functioning without the approval of the National Council of Technical Education.
In an interim order on March 3, 2006, the Calcutta High Court had directed the state government to stop admission to PTTIs. It declared that certificates issued by the unrecognised institutes will not be accepted. Thousands were supposed to appear in the June 2006 examination, which was cancelled at the eleventh hour. No examination has been held since then. Students resorted to various means of protest, including hunger strikes.
