Students alleged that not only the trees marked on the auction list were being cut but also those for which application for permission was not present. Trees were also being selected on the basis of their commercial value, it was further stated.
Meanwhile, INSO members held a dharna at Students’ Centre today to protest against the arrest of one of its leaders Anurag Chauhan. He had been arrested on the charges of assaulting a varsity official and pelting stones on the residence of the Vice-Chancellor.
Vikas Rathee, president, INSO, Chandigarh unit, said members of the organisation were being targeted for trying to put an end to irregularities in the varsity. “We had filed a number of RTI applications regarding the varsity. This is the reason why cases were lodged against us,” he said.
Meanwhile, Vice-Chancellor Prof R C Sobti said requisite permission was taken before cutting the trees. “I have constituted a committee that is free to investigate. The trees that were felled were old. I have asked the members to suggest means to save the remaining trees,” he added.
