Chandigarh, February 10 Professor Daljit Singh from Panjab University has been nominated as the first chairman of the State Environment Impact Assessment Authority of Punjab. The authority will be assisted by a panel of experts, the State Expert Advisory Committee. Professor A K Jain from Punjab Agricultural University will be the chairman of the expert committee.

Professors Singh and Jain have said that these panels will ensure efficient, fair and transparent assessment of environmental impact of all the new and expanding projects falling within their purview.

The assessment by these panels will be strictly on considerations of merit, with the primary focus on protecting the environment.

The panels will also ensure the use of better environmental management practices, technologies and systems, subject to technological feasibility and economic viability. They will strive to promote accelerated economic development along with better environment, energy conservation, and enhanced quality of life for the citizens of the state.

Prof Singh said that majority of the projects awaiting environmental clearance in the state are mainly related with real estate. "Rapid colonisation of the state, without corresponding increase in productive economic activity -- agricultural, industrial, knowledge enterprises, services, etc ż might not be in the best interests of the state," added Singh.
