The outline of the course was discussed during a workshop organised by the department recently. Experts from IIT Bombay, IIT Roorkee, IIT Kharagpur as well as representatives of various companies were present during the discussion.
Prof G S Gill, the convenor of the workshop,said, “The department has proposed a two-year postgraduate course in geotech engineering. The approval is, however, awaited. The course will ensure better employment opportunities for students.”
The course would open the doors for students to get placed in hydro power projects, oil industry as well as the construction companies. The course content would be designed keeping in mind the requirements of the industry. The aim is to have a course which ensures that the students can get jobs as they leave the department.
Prof Gill added that at present the students of the department are being absorbed in companies like the Oil and Natural Gas Commission, those involved in mineral development and others concerned with the environment.
The Department of Geology has been renewed as the Centre of Advanced Study under the Special Assistance Programme of UGC for a period of five years with the financial grant of around Rs 98 lakh.
