A masters programme in stem cell and tissue cultural engineering is on the cards. Talks are on for this with various experts and institutes including the PGIMER. The department, where the course would be started, is yet to be finalised.

Vice-Chancellor Prof R C Sobti says, “Stem cell is an emerging area so the scope for those who pursue the course would be wide. It will have a lot of importance in the coming years. But people have limited knowledge of the field. Also, there are misconceptions about the area. By the end of the month a detailed outline of the course will be ready.”

Recently, an Indo-US conference on ‘Animal Cell Culture, DNA Fingerprinting and Cell Marker Identification’ was held in the varsity. Interaction was held with experts from the US. Talks are on with them for the proposed course. During the conference a proposal for a DNA laboratory was also mooted.

The university would also start a centre for linguistic journalism. It is being proposed that one-year diploma programmes in English, Hindi and Punjabi will be started. This will held those who want to pursue vernacular journalism. The centre will be separate from the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism that is already present in the varsity.
