Dr Sen was awarded the Nobel Prize for his research on fundamental problems in welfare economics in 1998.
The authorities had also proposed a special convocation at New Delhi to award a degree to Dr Sen. However, the proposal did not materialise.
The Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also could not be conferred another honorary degree. He was a student and has also served as faculty member of the varsity. However, he has not visited the campus after assuming office. A scheduled visit by the PM on October 1 was also cancelled.
Dr Pachauri, who was also slated to be awarded a honorary degree by the varsity will not be able to attend the convocation on January 16.
Vice-Chancellor Prof R C Sobti said, “Our University is the first to award an honorary degree to Dr Pachauri. He will visit the varsity in a few days.”
