The PUTA members have had frequent meetings with the ministers of the Punjab cabinet including Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal, Minister of Higher Education Upinderjit Kaur, MP Sukhbir Badal as well as Minister of Cooperation Capt Kanwaljit Singh. However, the end result has not been favourable.
PUTA General Secretary Prof Manjit Singh said that a number of administrative and financial hassles of the university are linked to its ambiguous status. At present, it is partially funded by the Central government and partially by the state government.
President of Students’ Council Parminder Jaswal and President of Panjab University Students’ Union Tejpal Cheema said that they would intensify the protest if their demand is not met.
Central university status for the university would come with benefits both for the faculty as well as students. The retirement age of the faculty would increase to 65 years. The fee charged from the students of the Central Universities is less than that of PU. A monthly stipend is also given to research scholars.
With the Prime Minster Manmohan Singh announcing the establishment of a number of new Central varsities, PU is also expecting its share.
The teachers’ union feels that if one Central university is established in Punjab and Haryana each, it might lead to students and teachers preferring those varsities and eventually an exodus of experienced staff from PU.
