Washington US-based journalist Fareed Zakaria and Indian-American physician Sudhir M Parikh have said that they are deeply honoured and humbled after being chosen for the prestigious Padma awards this year.

“I am deeply honoured and humbled. I am absolutely delighted to be in the company of people with extraordinary achievements,” Zakaria said after he was nominated by Indian Government for the prestigious Padma Bhushan rpt Padma Bhushan awards.

Zakaria said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh deserves enormous credit for having moved India towards the path of greater degree of comfort and strategic insight.

“I believe India and the US are moving on a path of inevitable partnership,” Zakaria said as he pointed out that India’s natural place is with the great powers of the world.

“(There are) so many broad forces pushing these two countries together ¿from strategic forces to cultural forces to intellectual force. I believe that we would see the 21st century in which the US and India ideas, interest, values and increasingly cooperate on the global stage,” he said.

Philanthropist and publisher Parikh said that he was “deeply honoured and humbled” by the Indian Government’s decision to confer on him the prestigious Padma Shri award.

“I also recognise the responsibility of living up to this honour by redoubling my efforts to further US-India relations, and making greater efforts at community service on both sides of the Atlantic,” Parikh said in a statement.

PADMA AWARDEES by VKUMAR on 27 Jan 2010

AWARDEE MR. ZAKARIA SAID HE IS HONORED TO BE IN THE COMPANY OF GREAT ACHIEVERS. HE MUST BE KIDDING. LIKES OF CH(E)ATWAL, THE HOTELIER. CHATWAL HAS DEFRAUDED THE BANKS AND TREASURIES OF THE USA AND INDIA. HE HAS DECLARED BANKRUPTCY TO AVOID PAYING HIS DEBTS ( IN 90'S IN USA ). ALL OTHER AWARDEES SHOULD WITHDRAW!

Fareed Zakaria- Padma Bhushan by A. Pradeep on 27 Jan 2010

Fareed is one of the very few Muslims who talks sense and is proud of country of birth, India, and his country of residence,USA. Congratulations!

Padma Bhushan to Fareed Zakaria by Anjan Roy, USA on 26 Jan 2010

I think it is befitting that ace journalist Fareed Zakaria has been awarded Padma Bhushan by the Government of India. I watched the HBO documentary "Terror in Mumbai" recently in which Zakaria did an excellent job as the narrator. It was one of the greatest documentaries that I have watched in my entire life. It exposed not only the terrorist organizations in Pakistan, it also spoke a lot about the inept role the Pakistani government played in taming the terrorist groups in that country. It is a pity that knowing that Pakistan is the epicenter of international terrorism the USA has still been providing Pakistan with military assistance which they (Pakistan) will use against India.

Resident Indians only please by sangeeta on 26 Jan 2010

Padma Vibhushan to Fareed Zakaria is a cynical appeasement by palkodimir on 26 Jan 2010

Padma Vibhushan to Fareed Zakaria is a cynical appeasement to one who has been attached to the establishments mouth piece : CNN and Newsweek , known for their insanities and categorizations of hatred at non-Whites and emerging third-world democracies. Being an embedded and manoeuvring journalist, he has done a good service in praising the ruling political cliques in promoting the US%u2019s political, military and economic domination of the world. Pro-American journalists like him consider that it is natural and normal that they should unconvincingly support the foreign policies of the US administration however rotten they are and how much damaging the policies are to the emerging third world. Many of your readers can not comprehend that in most cases people like Fareed Zakariah are either horribly ignorant or deliberately they toe the dictates of the highly prejudicial CNN in order to serve the American interest and keep the job. Dissident journalists in the US hardly earn their living.

To all who feel different ----- by romesh.sharma on 27 Jan 2010

Gone through Palkodimir's comment and reaction of othrs on it.To my mind in overall concept palkodimir has rightfully said which in few words could be said that Zakaria is beyond doubt intelligent journalist but doesn't deserve that kind of high Award. All those who criticize palkodimir are themselves either not well-informed,are ignorants or simply want to show their best part of character of tolerance by appreciating all that is rising high.If someone had seen/watched Zakaria interviewing our PM Singh the very few words to begin this interview speak a lot for why and what for he is given this award. The PM had thanked him and said its matter of pride to be interviewed by A ZAKARIA.There were more praises from both sides than any meaningful point/question.It around four to six weeks before and was surprised how cheap and low the PM can behave. It was then only this Padma award was decided just the way it happened in Chatwal's case for his best services to entertain PM in USA and contacts with his daughter.

Disrespect for India, a cheap attitude by Bhavesh Mishra on 28 Jan 2010

Romesh Sharma has a typical Indian attitude. Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh had a nice interview with Mr. Zakaria and Romeshji did not like it. Other Indian PMs who visited US earlier never faced any foreign TV channels or faced any press conference. If Dr. Singh talk to him and added prestige to India why should you be worried so much? It is very cheap to say that offerig services to entertain PM and having contacts with his daughter. This is nothing but the utmost cheap attitude and disrespect for India and Indian Prime Minister.

Jealous romesh sharma by Manoj Sharma on 28 Jan 2010

Dear romesh, you so jealous of these awards winners? Zakaria interviewd the PM in a professional way and honoured India and Indian Prime Minister. You should be proud of it, but your jealosy for Dr. Manmohan Singh is exposed in your criticizm of Zakaria. Be little matured romesh.

Both Noam Chomsky and fareed are intellectuals but of different calibre and serve different masters by palkodimir on 27 Jan 2010

Thank you Brother Romesh Sharma for your well refined and well thought out clarification. There are different kinds of intellectuals, one those who serve a Government and hence toe the Govt. policies at times selling their conscience, there are intellectuals like Noam Chomsky who daringly point out the brutalities of his own Govt, regardless of the consequences and reduction of income and then the other intellectuals like our brother Fareed Zakaria who has a private axe to grind and served neo-liberal Reagan faithfully and was a conservative and jumped fence and supported Obama in the biginning and then got on to the band wagon of McCain( God knew his hideous intentions), in an interview he said he is not devoted to any ideology, well and good but please stick to the ideology of humanism, simply because his better half is from a different culture he need not sell his soul for a pittance

for palkodimir by Lachman on 27 Jan 2010

It seems to me that you are on a payroll of the Soviet and the chinese establishment, you sound envious of Fareed Zakarias achievments as a brilliant journalist working for a great media CNN, everybody who listens to Fareeds interviews with foreign dignitaries know that he is a very good, educated journalist, in my opinion he is even better than many American journalists.

Undeserving awarded by Krishna kumar on 27 Jan 2010

Fareed by Bulbul Yadav on 27 Jan 2010

Fareed is phenomenal. You need to cure your ignorance first.

Fareed will become a leading politician in the USA as he has "Abilities" by palkodimir on 28 Jan 2010

Balbul: fareed is on american payroll, he is phenomenal in promoting american occupation, expansion, aggression, world domination, organised state terrorism, fareed will sure become a leading politician within the next 10 years, watch it, people like him fetch very good price in the american political bazaar, american politics runs on bribery,it is a plutocracy rather than a democracy, a different sort corruption from India's, but still it is corruption, No one can become the american president without the campaign funds that are poured by the Military Industrial Complex of the US which are controlled by the zionists for whom Fareed works--the CNN and Newsweek, Have you heard about Jamie Kellner, Issacson, Larry King, paula Zahn, Koppel all are Zionist racists with whom Fareed is assocaited with. Read about good journalists like Robert Fisk the British and John Pilger the Australian.

Recognition by Government is not everything by Dr.G.Srinivasan on 27 Jan 2010

Probably right. But why decorate them with state honours? Some NGOs can do the job of recognizing their work. Again would the government have decorated/awarded Venkataraman Ramakrishnan had he not been given the Nobel Prize? Would they even have given him any credit? Are there any scientists capable of recognizing the work of scientists who have done excellent fundamental work?

Padma Bhusan - Fareed Zacharia, the real Indian. by citizen on 27 Jan 2010

Palkodimir, why are you so full of hatreed and prejudice. Can you accept the fact that he is one of the 'newsmakers' in America,if not the world. He is well educated, well informed and is respected. Most likely, you will goalong with the award for the "criminal CHATWAL" who is a disgrace to the NRI community. You dont have to like Fared Zakaria, why hate him?? I think typical indian attitude.

Sacrifice ones services for india to become a real indian by iraibakht on 28 Jan 2010

Padma Vibhushan by Ronaldo on 27 Jan 2010

Sir, Your comments indicate that you are egotistical and arrogant. You take it upon yourself to suggest that many of the readers/viewers are ignorant and incapable of intelligent comprehension and reasoning. We can only be thankful you are not a journalist. Fareed Zakaria is highly qualified and does not cow-tow to anyone. He doesn't have to. Try listening to him or reading his writings without your biases taking front and center.

Fareed -the well deserved by Madan on 27 Jan 2010

Cynics like Padkodimir cannot bear the sight of anyone being fairly honored except when "journalists" who (deservedly in my book)can hardly make a living get the prize. May be we should give a trophy for the most destitute among journalist- unfortunates on humanitarian grounds. But then why neglect the other millions of orphans and widows of this world who too are deserving? To malign people like Zakariah by unfair accusations is highly objectionable.

Fareed: The Well Deserved by the US norms by palkodimir on 28 Jan 2010

Madan:Any journalist, no matter how great an intellectual he is, whether it is Wolfowitz or Condoleezza or Friedman or any intellectual whoever went along with all the lies of Junior Bush (WMD, link with Al-Qaeda, Regime Change, promoting Democracy and the rest of the lies) and fully supported American invasion of Iraq, he may be an academic but he is an inhuman brute who had scant respect for international law. Zakaria was giving his full support for such an invasion in the beginning until he saw the devastation. What is the point in changing ones opinion after the destruction of millions of innocent people and after the destruction of a whole culture and civilization just to kill one bad ruler ? Saddam Hussein? Did Fareed think that he could play around with human lives as he would with a purchase of a suit he liked in the beginning but later changed his mind to throw it away for a new suit. There is so much of Human misery because of the advice of prize winning %u201Cgreat%u201D journalists like the hypocrite Fareed and his ilk

palkodimir by anant on 26 Jan 2010

Come on man. Have a life and start appreciating people who do well. By any chance are you a supporter of BJP?

Jealous by Omo on 26 Jan 2010

Hey Buddy, what is your point? Make your point and not go round and round in a merry go round.

Padma Bhushan for US resident Indians by Dr. Divyesh Raythatha on 26 Jan 2010

Selection of two US resident Indians Fareed Zakaria and Dr. Sudhir Parikh for Padma Bhushan Awards by the Indian Government will encourage other Indians living abroad also to work in the interest of Indian society and both the countries. Recognition of their services is important and it would inspire every Indian to coordinate activities and relations between India and the US.
