Gilani has been requested to avoid attending public gatherings and to undertake only activities that are necessary and urgent, sources in the security department told the Dawn newspaper.
The sources said the step was taken in the wake of an intelligence report about "serious threats to the premier's life".
The entire schedule of the Prime Minister, including the inauguration of projects and visits to different cities, has been cancelled because of the threat.
Gilani has also been requested to hold meetings and functions in the Prime Minister's Secretariat, the sources said.
Islamabad's Senior Superintendent of Police Capt (retired) Ahmad Latif told reporters that security in and around the federal capital had been tightened.
He said there was no specific terrorist threat but law enforcement personnel had taken "necessary precautionary measures". Pakistan has witnessed a wave of suicide attacks since early last year blamed on the local Taliban. The country's troops launched a major operation on Saturday against the militants holed up in its north-western tribal belt bordering Afghanistan.
