Islamabad Disgraced Pakistani nuclear scientist A Q Khan was declared a free man, subject to some security measures by a Pakistani court on Friday, even as media reports said that the government had come to an out-of-court settlement on easing restrictions imposed on him.

Responding to a petition filed by Khan seeking the further easing of restrictions on him, the Islamabad High Court reiterated its judgement of some months ago that the scientist was a free citizen subject to some security measures.

The High Court said Khan, who was accused of running a nuclear proliferation ring, could freely move around within the country and visit the Science Foundation for research.

There is also no bar on close friends and relatives meeting him, it said.

However, TV channels reported that Khan had reached some sort of secret, out-of-court agreement with the government on easing restrictions imposed on the scientist after he admitted to running a nuclear proliferation ring in early 2004.

"I have received information about being a free man from TV channels," Khan was quoted as saying by 'Dawn' News channel. "I think I am a free citizen now," Khan said, adding that he was "still at home".

Khan has been under house arrest since early 2004. Last year, he retracted his confession about being involved in nuclear proliferation, saying it had been made under pressure.

In recent months, some of the restrictions imposed on him were eased slightly. He now writes a column on science and other issues in 'The News' daily.

Paki nuclear rogue by Hero Vaz on 07 Feb 2009

Khan may be free but he has to live with titles as "disgraced nuclear scientist", "rogue scientist", "pariah scientist" and "international criminal who has put the world at risk". But what is amazing is that the impotent UN and impotent world are conniving in letting Khan off the hook despite his having committed one of the worst crimes, as bad or even worse than a war crime. Is the world so scared of the Pakis? What a terrible shame.

They are all together? by gary on 06 Feb 2009

Musharaf saved khan from US interrogation using tactics that pakistani people will find it hard to support the (factitious) pakistani war against terror. Now, zaradari wanted to make him a free man, to earn points from people supporting terror. They are all together in supporting bad people. But one question remains unanswered? If pakistanis are so concerned about health of these nuclear and other terrorists then how can you believe them to be parteners in war against terror? they are playing tricks to save their skin and get billions in aid from western world. If they are really serious against terror then they must be happy when US drones kill terrorists inside pakistani territory as US is doing their job. But on one hand pakistan claims to be the victim of, though "self promoted" terrorism, and at the same time oppose drone strikes? why? No brainer . Pakistan's duality is exposed. But why no one has the guts to tell the truth to the whole world?

Pakistan never surprises with the depths they can stoop to. by Mahesh V on 06 Feb 2009

Mr. Shekar Gupta, we havent heard from you on the Pakistan situation for a long time, What do you have to say about this? Do you still want us to believe that average Pak society is even remotely committed to doing what is right? Do you still believe that our disappointment in them, dislike of them and beligerence towards them needs to be reined in? Can you quote any instance of any substance since 26/ 11 that justifies a reconciliatory, indulgent attitude towards them?
