But they began to haunt the country in the post-9/11 era, Zardari said in a candid admission during an interactive meeting with former senior civil servants at the presidency on Tuesday night.
Militants and extremists emerged on the national scene and challenged the state not because the civil bureaucracy was weakened and demoralised, but because they "were deliberately created and nurtured as a policy to achieve some short-term tactical objectives," he said.
"Let us be truthful to ourselves and make a candid admission of the realities," Zardari said.
"The terrorists of today were the heroes of yesteryears until 9/11 occurred and they began to haunt us as well," he added.
Labelling Pakistan as a frontline state in the war against terrorism, Zardari pledged to eliminate this scourge from society. "I have taken charge at a difficult time and will come up to the challenges the country is facing."
His remarks came days after his comments in an interview that the Pakistan Army would even target militants it had backed in the past for use as a proxy force against India.
The army is currently engaged in a campaign against the Taliban in the northwestern Swat valley and is gearing up for a push against Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan chief Baitullah Mehsud and his network in South Waziristan tribal region.
Zardari also stressed the need for greater national reconciliation, saying he intended to keep all political forces together because Pakistan cannot afford confrontation at this juncture.
"Dialogue is our most powerful weapon...we defeated a dictator through the power of dialogue and we intend to continue holding dialogue to resolve various issues confronting Pakistan," he said.
"We are on the brink and we must realise that personal political games can no longer be played," he added. Responding to various suggestions by the former civil servants, Zardari said the government is taking several steps to improve governance, tackle militancy and extremism, improve law and order, agricultural output and power generation, strengthen institutions and devolve power.

So Zardari admitted.is it genuine or under duress to stay in power and milk for few dollars more?How many in isi,army,in govt.,in opposition want to reverse the wrongs?when are they going to extradite terrorists wanted by india?what all truths you have not admitted that india knows?what about the restitutions to all who have been murdered,injured,displaced?checkeble,veryfiable substance,facts,acts speak louder than admission of guilt.if 'i am sorry'is all you have to offer than india also is very capable to carry out lot of death,destruction in pakistan and will offer 'i am sorry'.india took high ground and pakistan thought india is spineless,stupid,naive,gullible,weak.india was never threat to pakistan.only country that will attack pakistan and destroy pakistan is pakistan itself.zardari may not be in power someday.another president will have his own agenda and that will be similar to roles india experienced since 1947.zardari admitted.pakistan did not.it can not.EVIL DNA.
I know this is going to put him under great threat within...but we must appreciate his bravery and honesty in admitting that...none until this date openely said that Pakistan is the culprit of creating terrorism....they used the terrorists to attack India...to infilterate to Kashmir and create tension...the only people who will be disapoointed if Pakistan stopped supporting terrorism will be the terrorists themselves and the Sanghis in our country as they will left with no subject for fooling our Hindu brothers.....and spreading misinformations...thus creating riots and raping women and killing small children....calling to end Islam..Muslimss...
We need to be careful of any such comments from pakistan which may seem to be an admission of their guilt. The fact is pka is a country created solely based on their differences with the idea of India. Though their leader Jinnah envisioned a secular state, he should have known better that a country created on the basis of religion can never be secular. That is why they hate the idea of a secular India, they always forget that there are more muslims living in India than their own country. pak is currently fighting a war against the taliban because of US pressure but make no mistake my dear Indians the billions of dollars in aid to pak is not 100% being used for the war against the taliban, some of it is used to keep the army top brass quiet so that they do not cause an uprising within the pak army and also because the money will go to training the future terrorists in kashmir - which is all what the pak army cares - destabilizing kashmir and the making India bleed.
Partly right, because the US is the father and Pakistan is the mother of all the dreaded terrorist organisations operating in the world from the Afpak region. Partly frank because still you are clear about the definition of terrorist and terrorism. You people still call the terrorists operating in Kashmir as "freedom fighters". Must admit Pakis have atleast admitted, and Zardari has shown he has matured himself into great leader. My only advice to Pakis and especially Zardari is to cool down for their summer is yet to come

Pakistan has nurished all kinds of extremists and they have pained the entire world. These extremists have been involved in many different sucide attacks on our and western countries.We sincerly hope that this country will finish every kind of extremist activities and form a new constitution which would be based on democracy and work for every of its citizen.We too in India should take care of the sanghi elements because they too are walking on the path of Al-Qaida.

Let us not get taken away by wrongly interpreting by Mr.Zardari's statements. At no point he has acknowledged that Pakistan trained terrorists for terror against India. His statement was made expressly made in connection with training terrorist ( then freedom fighters) for fighting in Afghanistan against the Russians. These people have come back to haunt Pakistan and its neighbours.

What Mr zardari said is true.Millitants are becoming victims of another Historical "U TURN"of pakistan.Itis not only Pakistan even India did the same with Tamil tigers and Americans repeated the history with Mujahdeen.Historians can not ignore the fact that in near past American president Ronald Ragon gave red carpet reception to Gulbadeen Hikmatyar(hero of that time who became one among most wanted rebels of americans).Pakistani establishment did mis use of heroes till time came and put them in zeroes.As far as Kasmir is concerned it has no concern with 9/11,no cnocern with millitancy,terrorism etc.It is matter of forgotten history ,matter of broken promises,matter of voltile aspirations,matter of frozen times,matter of supressed wishes.No one even Zardari wardari can ingnore this fact and it it could not be interlinked with any accedental turmoil or force.
Credibility is a very big point in international diplomacy and sicerety polishes it.Pakistan's past and present leaders both had absence of it.Even now noone knows from their own country and society that when will next U turn appear from.A country and society fed and brought up on religion and only religion face this result irrespective of its geography and religion both.But do they think that world can be fooled once again and they will develop it ocvernight as claimed by Mr Zardari.At least he has admitted it is only one more gimmick and world needs to look with care about the crdibility once again.But India has to pay the price and nobody else has paid it.Now it is the turn of Pakistan to pay it in multiple cost.
It takes great courage from a political leader of Pakistan to admit publically what Mr Zardari has done.When a country ceats a demon to achieve political goals, rest assured that the 'geenie' is out and can not be bottled again.Now this menance will have to be fought at the cost of lot lives and blood.Terrorism is very difficult to control and who can know better then the Asian ountries like India, pakistan and Srilanka.
