New Delhi With Pakistan dithering over the global call to act against terror groups involved in the Mumbai terror strikes, a US-based intelligence think-tank has projected that the South Asian state can very well turn into a ‘failed country’ soon.

"Pakistan already is a country in crisis, and in some ways it is hard to imagine it getting much worse. But if Pakistan continues to destabilise, it could very well turn into a failed country...albeit a failed country with a nuclear arsenal," security think-tank Stratfor said in its annual forecast on 'Jihadism'.

The report, titled 'Jihadism in 2009: The trends continue' and released in January, said Pakistan was once again the critical location for the Jihadists.

"Given the number of plots linked to Pakistan in recent years, including the November 26 Mumbai attacks and almost every significant plot since 9/11, all eyes will be watching Pakistan carefully," it said.

Slamming Pakistan for being home to al Qaeda's core leadership as it pursues its ideological war, the think-tank said the South Asian nation was also home to a number of Jihadist groups -- from the Afghan Taliban and the Tehrik-i- Taliban Pakistan in the northwest to Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed in the northeast, and several others.

Stating that the coming year might prove to be pivotal in the global efforts against the Jihadists in Pakistan, the Stratfor forecast noted that before it became a failed state, there were a number of precursor stages it probably would pass through.

"The most immediate stage would entail the fall of most of the North-West Frontier Province to the Jihadists, something that could happen this year," the report noted.

"This type of anarchy in Pakistan could give the Jihadists an opportunity to exert control in a way similar to what they had done in places like Afghanistan and Somalia (and already in the Pakistani badlands along the Afghan border.)"

The most optimist assessment of the report was that if Pakistan re-establishes control over its territory and the ISI, its rogue intelligence agency, and began cooperating with the US and nations fighting the Jihadists, the development could deal a terrible blow to the terror groups' aspirations on both the physical and ideological battlefields.

Importance of being a failed state by Hero Vaz on 20 Feb 2009

Pak is already a failed state. It is amazing how the US, NATO and England are licking the Paki backsides, despite that.

'Pak may become a failed state with nuclear arsenal' by Ratan Gupta on 02 Feb 2009

One wonders why Pakistan commands such an important position in the world geo-politics? Failed state. What is a failed state. What is the definition of a failed state? Does Pakistan has 700 million people surviving below poverty line? No. I still have to see a Pakistani without proper clothes on televison or media. We have millions without clothes. Does Pakistanis burning alive half a million women for not bringing dowry, No. We do that. Obama is financing 1 trillion dollars of stimulus package by borrowing the money from overseas. Pakistan is not doing that. What is the definition of a failed state? Israel receives as many as 15 billion dollars officially and unofficially from oversea or from west, in other words, it is the greatest beggar society in the world. Then nobody calls it a failed state. How come. We are living in a deceptive world man. Lies after lies.

Nuclear Pak danger by Hero Vaz on 02 Feb 2009

What is the US and the rest of the world doing sitting on the bones of their backsides? Pak's nuclear weapons need to be knocked out, urgently; they are at the bottom of all the threats and fears. Non-nuclear Pak and Pak sponsored terrorism can then be dealt with most easily, thereafter.

Pak by Mark on 01 Feb 2009

It is shear propaganda carried out on behalf of Pak and US. Why is everybody talking about Pak on verge of being a failed state after 26/11? It is only to blackmail India. And indeed if Pak is on the verge of being a failed state, it is because of direct result of failed US policies. India will have to pay anyways for its failed policies towards Pakistan. Letting Pakistan fail now may be painful today but will be good in long run. Playing into the hands of Pak and US today and reducing pressure on Pak and not holding them accountable will be painful in long run.

All ready a failed state by Amit Ranjan on 01 Feb 2009

May Become? by Pankaj Vohra on 01 Feb 2009

What does that mean....may? It already is a failed state. A nation carved out of india for muslims. Yet more stayed back then crossed over to pakistan. One half walked away in 1971. Ruled more than 70% of its entire independent life span under military rule. Currently on dole from IMF. Do you want me to go on........because it could last days.

Not will be but it is a failed state by romesh.sharma on 01 Feb 2009

Pakistan is and was failed state since long but USAmerican help had kept it alive by injecting Tax-payers money. The Pakistani regimes took it American need and helplessness which made Pakistan more demanding through cheap black-mailing type of tricks. Now that USA knows about treachery and perfidity Pakistan is indulged in they must stop any further monetary aid whatsoever. With the fears of bankruptcy and hunger they may get some sense to cooerate and listen to world community.True War is no real and immidiate solution but absolute sanctions from whole civilized world. No business atall and giving deaf ear to its propagative false claims and promises.More important for US and NATO forces is to take control of Pak nukes which Pak is using as instrument to get aid and same time threaten the rest of the world ,not only India. Its disgustingly boring to hear every Pak politician saying "we are nuclear power and responsible state".There are many other countries having nukes but nobody claim.

Pak by J.M.Manchanda on 01 Feb 2009

It seems unlikely that the Pakistani govt. shall be able to contain the army and reassert its control over NWFP, where Talibanis are running a parallel govt. Unfortunately the ISI has also become a law unto itself and the Pakistani civil society too nascent to ensure the defeat of militant force. Since foreign intervention invariably goes against popular opinion, therefore the chances of Pakistan sliding down into anarchy are greater than ever before. It is the responsibility of US , which funded the Afghan mujahideen in order to throw out the Russians to undo the damage it has unwittingly caused to peace in South Asia.

Surprised by Manish on 01 Feb 2009

US and Russsia, who has used PAk for their internal COLD war are as much responsible as PAK itself for not realizing this.
