Mumbai attack

Islamabad Pakistan authorities have obtained confessions from members of the Lashkar-e-Toiba that they were involved in the terrorist attacks in Mumbai on November 26, a Pak official said. These confessions will put pressure on Pak leaders but after weeks of stonewalling, it seems clear that Islamabad may use its investigation to make the case that the Mumbai attackers were not part of a conspiracy carried out with the spy agency, known as the ISI, but that the militants were operating on their own and outside the control of government agents.

US and British officials and Indian investigators have said for weeks that their intelligence clearly points to the involvement of Lashkar. That evidence

has been deeply uncomfortable for Pakistan, whose

ISI helped create, finance and train Lashkar in the 1980s to fight a proxy war in Kashmir.

The most talkative of the senior Lashkar leaders being interrogated is said to be Zaraar Shah, the Pak official said. US intelligence officials say they believe that Shah, the group’s communications chief, served as a conduit between Lashkar and the ISI. His close ties to the agency and his admission of involvement in the attacks are sure to be unsettling for the government and its spy agency. An operational leader of Lashkar, Zaki ur-Rehman Lakhvi, is also said to be cooperating with investigators. News of Shah’s confession was reported by The Wall Street Journal.

“These guys showed no remorse,” said the Pak official. “They were bragging. They didn’t need to be pushed, tortured or waterboarded,” into making their statements. The confessions made no mention of any involvement by the Pakistani government, said the official, who added, “They talk about people acting on their own.”

Though Pak authorities announced that the men had been detained in the first week of December, the official declined to say how long it took for them to confess their role in the Mumbai siege. The official also declined to specify how many confessions had been obtained, and said, “It’s not just one confession.”

But Indian officials and other skeptics are sure to question how seriously interrogations by Pakistani security officials could be expected to examine any possible role by the ISI in the attacks.

US intelligence officials say they believe that links remain between Lashkar and the ISI, and that the spy agency has helped support the militant group for the past several years by sharing intelligence and providing protection.

But American officials say they also believe that the spy agency has become more careful to mask its ties with militants since this summer, when American officials accused the spy agency of involvement in the bombing of the Indian Embassy in Afghanistan.

PTI adds: An FBI team visited the village of Ajmal Ameer Kasab, the lone terrorist captured during the Mumbai attacks, in Faridkot yesterday to probe his links. Diplomatic and other sources said the team conducted inquiries in the village. Sources rubbished reports in the media, particularly in some Pakistani TV channels, that the FBI team had found nothing that proved Kasab was a Pak national.

FBI spokesman Richard Kolko, asked by Dawn to comment on reports of the team’s visit to Faridkot, said: “The FBI continues to assist Indian authorities with their investigation. We will work with the Indian authorities and our partners to follow leads wherever they may take us.”

Cia , Mossad and M16 are working together on India's side. All that is happening is to tackle Pakistan and then Iran. Obviously we Indian's want Pakistan to fall so lets use the foreign powers. But what im worried about is that these foreign powers are strengthning India just because India can compete against China and Godforbid we can also fall in hands of CIA, MOSSAD and M16 after the fall of Pakistan.

Pakistan may use LET confessions by D.P.Karkara on 02 Jan 2009

When the Indian Government started what it called offensive diplomacy the sane voices warned that unless India showed self confidence in itself to rein in the enemy and takes hard decisions to reverse the damaging CBM's it had put into operation with the treacherous neighbour the international community will continue to take it lightly . It is apparent that after some lip service the US has done a faux pass. Compare this with the diplomacy of Indira Gandhi which left America dumb and India was able to deal a crushing blow. In the present situation a ruthless action is called for and India has to tell the other powers to see sense or stop bothering about what happens in SE Asia if Pakistan continues to with its mischief. The real fact that the Indian soul is hurt and their is pain of humiliation that we are projecting ourselves as a nation of weaklings. How long we will endure this? l

PAKISTAN ARMY: A JOKE. by James Mahomed on 02 Jan 2009

If Indians can not teach the savagery exported by her neighbour Indians might as well surrender their so called freedom or much touted democracy. What is the use of the fastest growing economy that is working for the benefit of these terror outfits and its spporters. US will not do much to Pakistan which has very little to lose. India shoul see that most of its economic growth is for the benefit of the dollar.Everyone except Pakistan knows that the terror outfits in Suth Asia have lins with Pak Army.Pakistan Army is a joke as it is really a terror outfit for the army moghuls and is least concerned about ordinary Pakistanis.

Pakistan is a Terrorist State by A Gokak on 02 Jan 2009

They imply that terrorists as 'non-state actors' have a free run of the Pakistani heartland to attack any country on earth in a prolonged manner using sophisticated land or sea-based technology without anybody in the civilian or military establishment knowing anything about it!!! Which means it is an official admission of Pakistan already being a failed state not responsible for the acts of its citizen!!! India must now uniliaterally declare its belligerent neighbour a Terrorist State, and proceed with proactive policies for its own defence and security in accordance with this! Enough of bowing and scraping before the world community for action or support!

ISI and Indian connection by Kunjumon on 02 Jan 2009

It was very evident from the beginning that Mumbai terror attack was the work of ISI with the aid and support of their masters CIA, MOSSAD and MI6. And it was done to help their associates in India and remove the thorn in their throat, the thorn in the form of revelations by mumbai ATS of their connections with ISI. Colonel Purohit revealed during the interrogation that RSS leader Indresh Kumar received 3 crores rupees from ISI. The whol episode of Mumbai attack using petty criminals from Pakistan has nothing to do with Islam or Jihad. When these Indian associates are in trouble terror attacks take place in India.

Real issues by Madhusudan Giri on 02 Jan 2009

Of course it is human life that we are all concerned with. Then why only focus on deaths due to sensational incidents reporting which feeds the adventurous terrorists and keeps fueling further incidents because of the reward of mass coverage generating more fear? Seeing it in perspective, more than 200 people die on Indian roads daily due to traffic law violations, bad vehicle design, bad roads, corrupt officials keeping obsolete vehicles road worthy and so on. The whole world knows that terrorism is an exclusively Pak export, designed planned and executed by Pak. Why waste time in pushing the point and wasting precious resources and media coverage into this when life for its citizens can be improved by strengthening India in other ways including cleansing the bureaucracy and state apparatus of corruption? Let's focus on things that can be done than worry about terror politics across the border, confused by global double standards.

wake up call for politicians by viklo on 02 Jan 2009

Now it is very clear that Indian politician are made fool by USA and Pakistani. USA want pakistani army to stay at afgan border and this is proving against India. If pakistani proves that taliban is completly washed out then USA may involve into kashmir situation and India may have to bow down in pressure.Indian politican need to understand the situation and act on its own ,Inida need support of russia as there may be time when we may loose even kashmir as now USA is favoring Pakistani after so famous terrorist incidence,IS IT NOT SURPRISING?. It is a wake up call for our politician.

Unnecessary Duality by SRikanth R on 02 Jan 2009

The title is deceiving. There needs to be no distinction between "Pak" and ISI as far as international relations are concerned. Every step that "PAk" takes is the result of whetting and approval of the ISI, if not it is quickly "corrected". So it is better to just say "ISI will use Let (a subsidiary of ISI) to give itself a clean chit".

Pakistan its ISI and thier jehad. by V.Shanmuganathan on 02 Jan 2009

The World very well knows that the perpetrators of Mumbai killings were Pakistanis, harbored by the ISI which is the pet of Pakistan.Thier Masters including US knows the fact from the very day the killings took place at Mumbai. But what stops the US to wage a war against the terrorists in Pakistan, who are the whole salers of the World terrorism. As a first step let the US and its allies stop all aids routed to Pakistan in the name of developments and to fight terrorism [ ? ].Once the aids are dried the poor Pakistanis will defenitly come in line and they will think twise to produce the terrorists for jehad [? ].Indian Officials should take the initiatives through the World body to stop the fund flowing to Pakistan in the name of " aid for fighting terrorism",there ends the game. The perpetrators of terror will die with out food, then where will be their jehad?

Double standards by Bharat on 02 Jan 2009

It seems not only Pakistan but also America speaking and acting dual. They want to suppress terrorists and not want India become unquestionable ????

Even the ISI plays by the rules by Jayadevan on 02 Jan 2009

The first rule any spy / secret agent learns is that he is totally on his own. If he is caught, he will be disowned by his masters. This is an accepted rule of the game. So even if the Mumbai operation had been orchestrated by the ISI, it is not to be expected that they act like fools. And it is not to be expected that the Indian intelligence agencies will break the rules of the game. Admitted, the ISI and RAW are adversaries, but they also are professionals who have to keep their countries from going to war. Even the KGB, MI6, CIA and KGB had their conduits of information and defused many crises. So the trail ends here. Very few assassins' trails have been followed up to their masters, if it is obvious that it is state-sponsored. It always stops at the first cut-out. The truth might be difficult to contain.
