London, January 29: Pakistani opposition leader Imran Khan said his country could do with taking a lesson in democracy from rival neighbour India as he dismissed the chances of next month's elections being transparent.

The Tehrik-e-Insaaf party chief predicted turmoil following the delayed February 18 parliamentary elections, insisting only the establishment of an independent judiciary could ensure a credible result.

The 1992 World Cup-winning Pakistan cricket captain briefly joined forces with his British socialite ex-wife Jemima in London on Monday to protest against Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf's visit.

A coalition of parties, including Khan's TeI, is boycotting the election in protest at ex-general Musharraf sacking top judges.

"I have great optimism -- in the long run -- because I think for the first time, we see light at the end of the tunnel," said Khan.

"We see an independent justice system coming. That's the only difference between India and Pakistan, that's how India got democracy. They have an independent election commission and judiciary; we don't.

"Once we have an independent justice system that is the beginning of change in Pakistan."

However, in the short term, Khan predicted chaos.

"I see turmoil after the elections, because the whole situation is ridiculous," he said.

"If Musharraf's party wins, no one will accept it. If the opposition wins, there's deadlock in the assembly. And there's a 50 per cent chance he'll try and delay the elections – and then there's turmoil again."

Pakistan's Crisis by Dr. Hina. on 29 Jan 2008

I believe Imran always talks truth, of late he realized taht Indian democracy is an example for all over the world. I hope Musarraf will also learn lessons from us and stop terrorism.

Pakistan situation Review by Gautam Chakrabarti on 29 Jan 2008

Main problem that Pakistan today is facing is that the country depends on USA heavily and never try to stand on its own. When USA gives donation/soft loan-Pakistan survives and when no loan comes Pakistan becomes a terrorist country. Among all the leaders in our region, Mr Musharaf is the most intelligent and sincere person-but looking towards US with begging bowl has ruined the country. No one wants to go to path of violance unless economic situation complelled to do it. Yes, there may be inspiration in the country, but this is secondary. If India has made more than 9% GDP Growth, it is all the people efforts to survive and for a better quality of life. Same inspiration a fellow pakistani should have , but easy money flow from US time to time will make the whole country as a part of South America.

If the muslims didnt want a seperate land, Imran would be playing for India. Probably Afghanistan would be what Pakistan is today and probably Iran would be...

Pakistan's Crisis by ashutosh mishra on 29 Jan 2008

To all those that rejoice at Pakistan's plight my submission is all is not well with us either so gloating better be avoided.Globalisation is causing challenge to our youth becoming clones of West....Tattoos and piercings, as if thats what they in their imagination inherited from their past. While technology and business driven India shines it simultaneously loses on values, rising divorce rates and general crime, killings by kids on school on campus as in the West etc.Plus large pockets within still steeped in poverty and following either utter superstition or ultra communism, the Naxal variety.Insurgencies abound on our nation's periphery. At the very least,Imran Khan and their types in their society are getting churned up and beginning to ask relevant questions as to what may have gone wrong with their national experiment. As neighbours with a history of violence between us we better not hurt their sensitivities by poking our noses and offer assistance only when and if ever asked. This builds confidence as neighbours are condemned to remain that way whether we like it or hate it.Such nutty outpourings like "stupid Imran may be joking" by KMR Overseas below, are reflective of these half baked Indians masquerading as the truest legatees of the great civilization called India and can only cause harm and must be warned to not present themselves as copies of whats wrong with unfortunate Pakistan. The truth is that with the new economy, thoughtless and undercreative ones such as them have got economically and socially well off while simultaneously lagging in either education or dignity. With this arrogance India can't grow and the danger of India going the Pakistan way rises pretty much.As these non-IIT/IIM background Techies end up in West due to current shortfall,it is going to prove to the Westerners here of their shoddy performance and Tons of arrogance while simultaneous ignorance and thereby undermine tolerant, truly noble, secular, great power India whose cultural ambassadors they ought to have been in the first place.Thanks.

non-IIT/IIM background by manish on 29 Jan 2008

hey asutosh , i think you used "non"(in IIT/IIM background) mistakenly because its those GREEDY guys from IITs who leave the country on the very last day of there of collegegovernment is providing them with the world class facilities on the expence of the hard earned money of indian taxpayers. They are the one who prefer to go to IIM after IIT ,and who would join any company wid higher pay pacakageonly the guys from non IIT stay in the country

I am a non-IIT/IIM techie and I have a great work ethic! by Hemant on 29 Jan 2008

Ashutosh, I agree with most of what you have written. I take exception to your suggestion that non-IIT/IIM techies are somehow shoddy in their work performance or are arrogant. Your statement infact reeks of arrogance and a superiority complex. I hope you have enough maturity to look within.

Islam and Democracy do not co-exist as Oil and water...Stupid Imran may be joking!! by KMR Overseas on 29 Jan 2008

Take leeson from India in democracy by joy on 29 Jan 2008

How cunning this Mr. Imran Khan, he always used to tell bad about India .Now when things go against him he sees good in India. I will tell you Its Immposible to have any stebility in Pakistan ever, because its the curse of all people of India, as I see being in deepest trouble pakistan government always worked hard to spoil India's secular identity and spred terror for the sake of getting sympathy from Pakistani people to win elections. if they would have worked as hard then Pakistan would have been a prosperous country. so I feel its time to mend ways and work with India rather satisfy some terrorist gang.

Pakistan and Imran Khan by Megh on 29 Jan 2008

Pakistan can be great nation provided they adopt democracy, freedom of speech and religion, and wash their hands off from terrosism and militancy. Pakistan needs to invest in education, health care and infrastructure, rather than arms, defence and militant training camps. Pakistan has a lot to learn and needs to move ahead, otherwise it will be a nation built in dreams and illusions of Mr. Jinnah. So, what is needed is Pakistani politicians and ofcourse the army need to change their feudal mind sets, adopt reforms and build peoples trust and confidence to move ahead. Pakistan has a long way to go and India as one of the fastest growing nations cannot tolerate nonsense in its borders.
