It was "clear that the attackers had links that lead to Pakistani soil," visiting Assistant Secretary of State Richard Boucher told reporters on Monday.
Boucher, whose arrival in Islamabad coincided with India handing over evidence about the terrorist attacks to Pakistan, said the US wants Islamabad to investigate the information provided by New Delhi, follow available leads and track down perpetrators so that similar attacks do not occur in future.
India and Pakistan both had "pieces of the puzzle" and need to cooperate, Boucher told the news conference at the US embassy in Islamabad after talks with the country's top leadership.
"The two sides need to exchange information," he said, adding that India and Pakistan need to work together as this alone will ensure that the perpetrators of the attacks are tracked down.
The US had a "direct interest" in the probe as six of its citizens were killed in the Mumbai attacks, he said, adding "We are interested that those responsible must be found".
The "scene of the crime" is in India and authorities there have made some arrests. At the same time, Pakistan had detained persons involved in the planning and execution of the attacks, he said. Both sides will now have to follow up on the available information, Boucher said.
Asked whether the US believed Pakistan's state institutions, including the ISI, was linked to the strikes, Boucher said: "Let us find out from the evidence (handed over by India) who was involved in these attacks" and "not jump to conclusions".

Pakistani media had reported that Ajmal Kasab was arrested by Indian police two years ago from Indo-Nepal border and Mumbai police is using him to sing the song composed by it.Did FBI interview Kasab personally? Did FBI check the dead bodies of nine slain terrorists? Did the concerned publish the photos of slain terrorists in India,Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh so that their relatives will identify them and come forward to claim their bodies(many people even doubt that the slain terrorists are not Muslims). Did our police allow Pakistani embassy officials to personally interview Kasab and see the dead bodies of slain terrorists? If these actions were not taken place, how can our government confirm that the arrested and slain terrorists are Pakistanis. At the beginning of the anti-terrorist operation in Mumbai, police had claimed that they had arrested nine terrorists.What happened to them? Eye-witnesses in Kama Hospital had stated that those who killed Hemant Karkare were Marathis.
Mr.Abdulla...pls have you sense intact.Ajmal Kasab's parents have confirmed he was their son.It was not reported by our media but Pakis.Now the Pak govt is hiding them somewhere.Why?.Dont be so foolish by putting everything on a question.Truth is that these people are enemies of our nation and religion.Had they have little humanity in them,they wouldn't have come to another country and kill the innocents.According to Islam, killing a single innocent person is equal to kill all humankind and saving a life is equal to save all mankind.Dont have the tone of Pakis who reject everything.Their interest is nothing but distruction of our economy and internal harmony.
Kasab was interrogated by the FBI. Pakistani media has had reports identifying Kasab's family and his hometown. I'm not sure where you get off by claiming that the police _arrested_ nine terrorists or that Marathis killed Mr Karkare, or even that Kasab was arrested on the Indo-Nepal border when there's actual security-cam survelliance showing him butchering people at VT.I have much sympathy for innocent Muslims caught in the political cross-fire in all of this, but seriously, you'd have to be smoking something seriously strong if you actually believe anything of what you said.
Mr. Abdulla,Hope you are a graduate atleast. Why don't you put your muslim identity aside and think like a human being. Even if somebody kill his mother, there will be two opinion about it. In the case of Mumbai Terror it is totally disagreeable if people like you (seemingly educated) think like this.
