China will supply the 36 J-10 fighter jets, enough to equip two squadrons, under a preliminary agreement that could lead to "more sales", a Pakistani official has said. Pakistan might buy "larger numbers" of the multi-role aircraft in the future but has not signed any deal to purchase as many as 150 jets, the official told the Financial Times.
The J-10 or Jian 10 is China's most advanced combat aircraft and is the third generation fighter comparable to American F-16 Fighting Falcons. Islamabad and Beijing are also collaborating to build an advanced fighter -- JF-17 or "Thunder" and the first of these aircraft are expected to roll out by the end of this month, air force chief Air Chief Marshal Rao Qamar Suleman said recently.
China is one of the main arms suppliers of Pakistan and has sold combat jets to it for over three decades. But Beijing has seldom supplied Pakistan with advanced fighter aircraft like the J-10. Pakistan bought Mirage jets from France in the 1970s and F-16s from the US in the 1980s.
Pakistan has a fleet of 45 F-16s that have been used to some degree in anti militancy operations in Swat and South Waziristan, defence experts said.
The US recently agreed to sell Pakistan another 18 new F-16s and officials also expect the Americans to supply about a dozen used aircraft. The Pakistan Air Force plans to acquire at least 250 JF-17s over the next four to five years, which would become its future mainstay.
Defence experts have described Pakistan's agreement with China to buy the J-10 jets as a "landmark event" in the defence relationship between the two countries.
"This agreement should not simply be seen in the narrow context of Pakistan's relations with China," said Abdul Qayyum, a retired Pakistani general.
"There is a wider dimension. By sharing its advanced technology with Pakistan, China is... also saying to the world that its defence capability is growing rapidly," he said.

Hello friends , 3 years back we initiated MMRCA program still it is not finalized ,Tejas LCA induction not happened yet. We are honest I agree with every one , but why our people taking too much time to do the things???? This is our weakness or what ever you call , but Pakistan is begging or buying we don%u2019t know but they are taking very quick decisions which we are not doing.
This will greatly boost the PAF. The J-10 will provide not only air-air combat, but substantial ground attacking capability. Its 1500km combat range will allow Pakistan to take on offensive missions.

F-16 jets were flown to pakistan from US by american pilots after puchasing. Where as When India purchased Mirgae-2000 from france,Indian pilots themselves piloted to India.This is enough to skill of IAF pilots.What ever arms pakistan purchase or beg from other nations,it requires some skill and brain to use it successfully.

While going through the comments, it is understood, that people are bothered about what pakistan is buying; what china is selling, pakis are flying to australia; India reached late in sweden/denmark to buy shoes. Why these people are worried about all these things. Think of just one objective for India - Try to overtake china in military might on land, sea & air; and if possible a space based military base, in the shortest possible time. It is possible - India has the resources and brain; but the billions should not go to anybody's pockets - please don't allow Madhu Koda or Raja (the minister) to participate in the debate for procurement of military hardware.
Israel has deceived us and America again. J10 is equivalent to F16 fighter and costs less than half price. Who provided the DNA of F16 to China? Guess who? Israel. Pakistan's defence experts are far ahead than us. In early 90's a defence team of Pakistan secretly landed in Australia. Before Indians got into action, Pakistan had already bought 200 Mirages paying few thousand for each piece. Australia was about to retire those planes. The same planes transported to Pakistan and upgraded to play a vital role in the combat. Same thing happened in Kargil, all the Danish or Swiss Shoes specialised in snow mountants were bought by Pakistan before we went there to find out - out of stock. Our defence budget is around 25 billion while Pakistan's 4 billion. They are outsmarting us in the cost as well while maintaing the quality. The recent Chinese deal is the proof. Solving the outstanding issues with Pakistan will be beneficial to both parties, not China.

It is a good news that Pakistan has to rely on Chinese Fighter jets not on F16. Do not worry about this sale. No need to mention the quality of Chinese products. Make a better thorough analysis before a expressing your views. We already have fighter jets which comes under 4.5 Generation category and are more advanced than F16. This being the reason India is not interested in F16, however they might buy F35 or F18 fighters.

At last happy news from Pakistan for Indian forces, they are going to buy outdated technological fighter air craft from China. 36 units, delivery starts from 2015! Really this is a happy news for Indians. We already developed 4, 4.5 generation fighter jets by using our own tech. First squadron will be inducted by 2011 by Indian air force and few more by in coming years and its naval version as well. There are too much advanced is the 4 or 4 generation jets. The Paki buying just 3rd generation! We also inked contract with Russia to build 5th generation fighters, may be by 2015 or beyond. Dont worry Indians if things are going this way we no need to worry. Just hardwork for goals and lead a peaceful and joyous life. Help the poor at the same time to upgrade their living standards.. This is wastage of technology and hardware China wants to dumb and loot Pakistanis.
