Islamabad Pakistan will formally respond within a week to India's dossier on the Mumbai attacks by describing the information provided in it as "scanty and insufficient" and by renewing its offer for a joint probe into the terrorist strike, a media report said on Thursday.

"The Pakistani response is almost prepared after prolonged consultations in Islamabad among the Foreign Office, interior ministry and other security agencies and it is being given a finishing touch," a senior official who did not want to be named told the pro-establishment The Nation daily.

The response will be handed over to India in a week after it is approved by the President and Prime Minister, he said.

The dossier had been thoroughly examined and the Pakistani response could be summarised by saying that "the Indians would be told to extend concrete evidence to Islamabad and not information", the official said.

The response will also describe "the so-called Indian evidence as scanty and insufficient," the daily said.

Pakistan would repeat its offer for a joint probe into the Mumbai attacks with "a plea that it was the only workable solution" to the standoff between the two countries, he said.

The official declined to share details of the Pakistani response but said that it described the "Indian information (as) not something that could be produced as admissible before the court as a piece of evidence".

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, in his address to parliament on Tuesday, had said material provided by India constituted information and not evidence.

Reacting strongly to Gilani's statement, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Wednesday accused Pakistan of evasiveness.

Meanwhile another Pakistani official said instead of indulging in a blame game, India should accept Pakistan's offer of a joint investigation. He said if Pakistan were not serious in cooperating with India on the Mumbai attacks, it would not have made such an offer.

The official added that the world community too is asking for joint work by Pakistan and India to trace those involved in the Mumbai attacks.

Information as live reporting by john jacobs on 15 Jan 2009

Surely Pakistan does not believe that the attack on hotels, Railway station and on the Jewish residence was a drama staged by Indians for the benefit of a world audience? People were killed, properties were set on fire and damaged and a lone terrorist of Pakistan origin was captured alive in the shoot out. These happenings were carried alive in the full glare of the world as the "drama" unfolded. What difference does it make even if what the network carried was only " information" if the film footage actually constituted evidence of what took place in real time? What the world witnessed was the commission of a crime in progress, the evidence you need. The "information" and evidence therefore are one and the same in this matter, Mr Gilani and gives little chance for resorting to semantics.

Military acquisations from US/UK by Sambuddha Gupta on 15 Jan 2009

Pakistan has always been shielded by US/UK. Hence we should keep our military acquisations from these to countries to as low as possible. This will make their defence industry suffer by missing the Indian market.

Pack-is-tanned by Pat Simon on 15 Jan 2009

Since its birth, Pak is playing proxy war against India. The religion based concept of Pak is responsible for its failure. While US, UK and other western countries will look for their own interests, India should ensure that they snap all ties with this terrosist state and destroy the insurgents. Every state in India must ensure that sleeper cells of terrorists and corrupt elements are destroyed.

consious pakistan by prerna on 15 Jan 2009

good pakistan is soon going to realize that its initial assessment of the terror strikes were incorrect pakistani citizens in association with official agencies like army and isi were responsible for the killings and would apologize for the incidence and the confusion thereafter and would handover all the terrorists accused of terrorism to india immediately. pakistan also would start taking necessary measures to ensure that such activities don't take place in india or anywhere else in the world. and later manmohan singh and all of the congress would wake up to realize it was one big pipe dream

Joint Investigation by a Terrorist State?? by Rao on 15 Jan 2009

Pakistan seems to be more interesteted in joint investigation only to ensure that they would know apriori about the findings, so that they can bail out the culprits. It is high time that Pakistan is declared a terrorist state (of course, US and UK have their own agenda and selfish motives not to accede to this and other countries are not worried, since they are not affected so much by terror). The leat that India should do now is to sever all trade with Pakistan and be ready to sever diplomatic ties with Pakistan. Enough is enough and India's confidence building measures (even if it has to do with its policy of appeasement) shall be halted forthwith.

Nothing learnt by romesh.sharma on 15 Jan 2009

There is going to mbe no surprising and favourable response from the Pakistani regime. It will be all the same critics and refusal of any Pak connection with terrorists who attacked Mumbai and the presence of criminals in their land.Just the old repitions perhaps formulated in more croocked language.Playing pranks and paltering is the diplomacy they master. The biggest fools are sitting in the Indian Parliament who still hope some sincere cooperative action from Pakistan. We have to wait till next elections and see new Govt with boldness and courage takes over.Hopefully Modi as PM.Sad that these political goons haven't learnt anything from the bitter experiences of the past.

Strategy to the PM by Anand on 15 Jan 2009

India should collabrate with Israel and USA. We should diplomatically align with Forces that fight with Terrorism either it is Gaza, Afganistan or Pakistan and not try to take moral high ground. We should form Mosat like secret service and stop talking with Pakistan. We should involve in covert action and hit the terrorists in a way they don't even know what hits them. No need for public debate and discussions when it comes to national security. We should form very strong military security and countries like Pakistan should fear us and we should act like a strong country. I would suggest Lalu Prasad or such tough character to be appointed as Home security. Diplomatically we should align with the west and send forces to Afganistan. People should be made to pay huge price for what they did and we need to do this and terrorists and countries should think many times before any such terrorist action is carried out in the future.

Dossier recieved! So what? Kuch fark nahin painda by oldindian on 15 Jan 2009

You dont need foreign minister and army chief to tell the world that "All options are on the table and our patience is running out". I am sure that "All options are on the table" is meant for our (Indian public) consumption. Becoz all actions definitely includes taking no action at all. For some reason I find it strange on part of ISI and Jud to have kept silent for 2 months after the attack. Are they getting bored? "kitna bhi maarein bharat sarkar pe kuch asar nahin pad ne waala hai! Time aur bomb - dono ka waste!". I am very confident indian govt will not do anything, if u r going to nuke them. Our PM will quickly jump to his feet and say "We will take strict action" and then everything will go back to as they are. Very heartening to see our army leaders too joining "Testing of patience" quacking!!

Pak diplomacy by Siva Kumar on 15 Jan 2009

No body in this world will accept the irresponsible and misguiding statements from this terrorist state. It is very clear from day one after the mumbai attacks that Pakis are not going to accept they were behind this henious crime.Though the whole world agrees Pakis hand in the Mumbai attack they were in the denying mood. Our spine less cowards politicians keeps on giving lectures on day today basis to keep their vote bank safe instead of atleast breaking the business and diplomatic relations with pak.Shame on you Indian rulers.

Weak nation by kaushal on 15 Jan 2009

The problem is not the Pakistan or Bangladesh or Islamic terrorists. They are doing what enemies should be doing. The problem is, what we are doing it to tackle the problem. The problem lies in the mindset of our Govt, the so called secular brigade, and the irresponsible media. We as a nation are not doing our duty of protecting our nation. The people in power ( either govt, media or so called intellectuals) are hell bent on destroying our nation and its culture.ThanksKaushal

Why bangladesh become enmy [think] by Vishal on 15 Jan 2009

Why bangladesh become enmy [think]We have nearly all neighbour as enemy.Even Bangladesh which is separated from pakistan by us [but didn't join us] is also becoming our enemy. Why not a foreign policy like china which in a span of last 10 years become the Third largest economy of the world.China have no such enemies on his neighbours although have around 20 neigbouring countries along its border.Lets solve Kashmir issue even both countries have to swallow a bit harsh realities.
