Islamabad Pakistan wants the ‘composite dialogue’ with India to be resumed as soon as possible as it is committed to friendly relations with all its neighbours, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said on Tuesday.

During a meeting with visiting Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith, Gilani spoke about the actions taken by Pakistan after receiving an information dossier on the Mumbai attacks from India.

"The Prime Minister stated that Pakistan remains committed for pursuing friendly relations with all its neighbours, including India, and hence wanted to return to the composite dialogue process with India," said an official statement.

Gilani also said his government is determinate not to Pakistan's soil to be used against any other country.

Smith, the first Australian Foreign Minister to visit Pakistan since 1998, hoped that after Pakistan's response to the Indian dossier, both sides "would revert back to the dialogue process in the larger interest of peace and stability in the region". Smith had on Monday urged the Pakistan government to crack down on the Lashker-e-Taiba and to bring the perpetrators of the Mumbai attacks to justice.

India suspended the composite dialogue shortly after the Mumbai incident, which it blamed on Pakistan-based elements, including the LeT.

Thanking Smith for his offer of assistance in training Pakistani personnel in countering terrorism and for increased development aid, Gilani urged the Australian government to consider granting Pakistan the Generalized Preferential System (GPS) facility.

This facility will help in bridging the widening trade gap between the two countries and enable Pakistan to generate new employment opportunities, a necessity in its strategy to eliminate extremism and terrorism, he said.

Gilani informed Smith about his government's measures to isolate militants from peace-loving tribesmen and the situation in areas along Pakistan's border with Afghanistan.

Smith said Australia "would stand shoulder to shoulder with Pakistan and help it in any way possible to eradicate the menace of terrorism".

Internal problems like SWAT cant be solved thru dialogue, how will Pakistan solve problems with neighbours? by Mahesh V on 18 Feb 2009

If the victory of the Taliban in Swat indicates anything, it is that "talks" or dialogue with Pakistan are futile. They need to be treated the way the way the Taliban treats them and only then will they come in line. It is amazing how quietly they rolled over and subjugated themselves to Afghan led rule in Swat , and ONLY because it was a result of Vilolence in the name of Islamic Life and Sharia. Pakistanis like to pretend to preach Non-violence and peace, but ultimately the only thing they understand and accept is Violence and Unrest, particularly when that Violence is explained and made acceptable in the name of Islam. One really feels for the Women of SWAT. Indian women have their problems with moral policing, but at least we have systems in place to tackle them, and Indian women have not been completely sold out in the name of religion.

Pak wants ‘composite dialogue’ with India by Mike Vig on 18 Feb 2009

The Pakistanis are at it again. This is the most ridiculous country on earth. If you think Bihar is backward, corrupt and poor, go to Pakistan and Bihar will suddenly look prosperous and modern. Of course they have built some western –friendly buildings and boulevards in selected areas to give an illusion. Thanks to Uncle $am. But the thugs in Armani suits can’t hide it all. Today this is a wholly massacred country with no economics, soul or character. They kill each other in the name of religion and then spread it around too. Still, in India we keep giving an undue importance to this wretched country of thugs and liars. It is important India keeps treating this country what it deserves. You show them the boot, they will beg for your attention. They are doomed. I will give 15 years maximum when history will repeal the blunder of 1947 and the Pakistanis will be dying to be Hindustanis and begging India to take them back. They have no other option.

Dialogue with Pak by Peacelover on 18 Feb 2009

No dialogue should be resumed until Pak dismantles its terror industry and handover the wanted terrorists to India. India should continue to keep up the pressure and severe all ties diplomatic, commercial and also sports/arts until the objectives are achieved. Pak is a failed state, which has already surrendered to Taliban. When the whole world is being moderised, Pakistan is slipping back to medieval barbarism. Now they only have to rename Pakistan as Talibanistan.
