Pakistan has more nuclear weapons than India: Report

Posted: Nov 18, 2009 at 1201 hrs IST

Washington Pakistan is estimated to have more nuclear warheads than India and the two Asian neighbours along with China are increasing their arsenals and deploying weapons at more sites, two eminent American atomic experts have claimed.

While Pakistan is estimated to possess 70-90 nuclear weapons, India is believed to have 60-80, claims Robert S Norris and Hans M Kristensen in their latest article 'Nuclear Notebook: Worldwide deployments of nuclear weapons, 2009'.

The article published in the latest issue of 'Bulletin of the Atomic Science' claimed that Beijing, Islamabad and New Delhi are quantitatively and qualitatively increasing their arsenals and deploying weapons at more sites, yet the locations are difficult to pinpoint.

For example, no reliable public information exists on where Pakistan or India produces its nuclear weapons, it said.

"Whereas many of the Chinese bases are known, this is not the case in Pakistan and India, where we have found no credible information that identifies permanent nuclear weapons storage locations," they said.

"Pakistan's nuclear weapons are not believed to be fully operational under normal circumstances, India is thought to store its nuclear warheads and bombs in central storage locations rather than on bases with operational forces. But, since all three countries are expanding their arsenals, new bases and storage sites probably are under construction," the two nuclear experts said.

I have read all the comments on this article, and find it quite amusing that most of my harmless but sensible comments are deemed inflamatory, but Dr Dube's comments are fine. How come? My comment on interrogating Mahesh Bhatt as a suspect,in Headly case was considered bad.How Come.

I think the number doesn't matter. If only tow or three nuke bomb of high power is dropped at right place, it will be more than sufficient for destruction of a country like pakistan.....

Weak Politicians by Kumar on 19 Nov 2009

Every Indian should ask the ruling party who has been weakening the country for the last 60 years. How come we cann't fight China and Pakistan simultaneously ? Nehru to Rahul are very eager to grab power by hook or by crook but who will defend Mother India ? Tibet, Kashmir, China Border, Maoist, Bhindrawale etc. problems are their gift to India. Shame on this party.

Pakistan has more nuclear weapons than India: Report by Ratan Gupta on 19 Nov 2009

We wasted billions in splitting Pakistan in 1971 with the help of local uprising. We just wanted to show to the world that we are something. Then we tested nuke in 1974. Then we supported stupidly the Russian invasion of Afhganistan unreasonably. We then exploded 5 bombs in 1998. Then, despite of reaping 300 billion dollars officially and through hondi, from Muslim countries that benefited most to ordinary Indian citizens, we still secretly contacted to Israel. All the above created red flags throughout the Muslim world. Interestingly, none of the Muslim countries supported Pakistan on Kashmir. None. On the contrary, China is all over the Muslim world. If any country is most respected in the Muslim world is China. Now China is taking copper from mines in Afghanistan - Taliban has no problem. Tragically, 100 thousand or so of our elite is leading the Muslim-hate policy which will not be beneficial to any Indian at all. This is our situation.

PAKISTAN HAS MORE NUCLEAR WEAPONS THAN INDIA by Dr. H.S. Rathore on 19 Nov 2009

These stories are carefully manufactured abroad and then inserted into the Indian media. They are surely worth laughing at. Firstly Pakistan has no Uranium Ore this is a confirmed. fact. Secondly, Pakistan got 60 kilograms of enriched U-235 from China for two weapons. Thirdly, India can field more nuclear weapons than China. Fourthly, if Pakistan had a genuine nuclear arsenal the U.S. could never have landed troops into Pakistan and fired the drones as well into Pakistan from Pakistan! Lastly, India is a large country and to do serious damage to India one needs several hundred warheads. Indian media would be wise to ignore foreign sources which have an agenda. We must target the backers of Pakistan extensively now.

More non-news by Devasahayam on 19 Nov 2009

It is already known that Pakistan had purchased some (and been donated other) nuclear weapons and missiles by China (by transferring them, it can hide them as Pakistani)--so it is hardly even news.

Analysis by Ripu Daman Singh on 18 Nov 2009

This report further proves Pakistan's anti-India policy.Pakistan itself is on the verge of a civil catastrophe, still,it is more concerned about building it's arsenal rather than building the nation. It's high time that Indian policy makers put forward a comprehensive policy against anti-Indian elements. It is the need of the hour to take our defence to the level of Western Nations if not quantitatively, then at least qualitatively. Also the delays in defense deals should be taken seriously.

Part 2 by Lekarshi on 18 Nov 2009

And for those who are talking about 26/11 the Marathas were able to successfully defend themselves much before India was born during the reign of Shivaji. Today's Mumbai is more of a bane than a global city or whatever the muck these "brand name loving" people are talking about to the average Maratha. If they want their hogwash about this brand name why not bring the British back and rename India back to its colonial name, sounds more brand friendly than "India".

Re: by Varun Deshpande on 19 Nov 2009

People like you will never understand the concept of India. Keep your asinine opinions to yourself and move to Canada or something.

repy to lekarshi by zak on 19 Nov 2009

you might have apoint on hindi as a national language but let me remind you that India is a country because of the assimilation of all the cultures from various states together.also the terrorists have taken advantage of the socalled nut head and corrupt politicians we need a leader like Ronal Reagan the US President who would bombard the Pakistani President and ISI on the first strike of Indians being killed by Pakistani terrorist also one more note to pakistan you can try whatever you want but you can never win a war with India and that is a truth. Lets also face one more thing Pakistan is full of shit.and ifyou want to be like them by claiming regionalism you can go to pakistan and see what it is for a fact.(shit)so before you talk about south north and west or east look at what happend to others who went free from Indian federation one more example to you will be Bangladesh. dont you dare talk about the British rule as you never suffered under their control.

Reply to Zak by Lekarshi on 19 Nov 2009

Assimilation is the wrong word to describe India. India is a nation with distinct cultures living in some form of toleration. India is plagued with problems regionally and just because it%u2019s doing better than Pakistan economically means nothing to the average Indian. One can go out and find for him/herself on this by visiting any part of India. The East, Kashmir and parts of the south always wanted to secede from India. Now whether they will do well without being a part of India is another debate altogether. Internal migration in India is a serious problem. One has to acknowledge this. Nobody wants to hate Hindi%u2019s or anybody else for that matter, they are after all another community, another language and another culture. They are certainly welcome, as long as they respect the hosting community. And please don%u2019t yield profanity of India being a super-power or an economic power or what have you, India is very much third-world. Compared to probably Pakistan, India is certainly doing better, but this is no yard stick for living standards. A divided India on the lines of Europe will certainly do much better. Just like the European Union there should exist an Indian union where multiple regions can co-exist peacefully.

Part 1 by Lekarshi on 18 Nov 2009

Indian patriotism is indeed being shoved down our throats these days. Everybody is standing up for an India whose past they hardly know about. India is like an understanding between the various regions in that geography that have faced invasions and conquests from foreign warlords in the past to stand up for each other. Other than that there is nothing that binds India together. To me a Hindi, a Punjab or an Assam is as alien as Winston Churchill himself!! Why should I be forced to accept Hindi or a northerner or an easterner or wherever a person's from in my land, the land where my people have lived for thousands of years, EMPHATICALLY? And I respect the sentiments of Hindi's in the north and other inhabitants of the north as to how they feel when some of my brothers go over there and try to speak Tamil or any other southern language instead of learning Hindi or whatever language they speak over there. If Hindi's want to live in the south they have to adapt to the southern culture, they have to speak the language and respect the sentiments of these people, not show this patriotic smidgen.

My best friend died in the name of freedom fighting the Pakistanis. He did not fight for any religion. He died with honour as the Commander of a war ship. Pakistan accumulated all the weapons from the shipments thru Karachi port by the United States meant for Afghanistan...Never got there..Only in paper. The religious fanatic so called "muslim" hatred towards India will remain until India is able to take a positive and concrete step to stop their terror. The Indian politicians are naive and corrupt and refuse to learn a lesson after all these years of "democratic freedom". PEACE...

Hatred by Suneet Bhutta on 18 Nov 2009

You are absolutely right, people in India do not realize that pakistan was born out of its hatred for India. It is because of the fact that Jinnah did not like hindus and muslims living together that he demanded a separate nation for the muslims. pakistan hates the idea of a secular India. The recent bok by Jaswant singh blames the Indian politicians for agreeing to the partition. What is there to blame our politicians of that time? They believed in the idea of a secular India where people of all religions could leave under one government. So why blame them? The blame lies on jinnah and his bunch of goons who killed, massacred and looted in their demand for a separate country. The simple question everyone in our current generation should ask is what would they have done if they were faced with a situation like our politicians did in 1947 ? Jinnah was hell bent on getting a separate country and he was prepared to kill and destroy innocent people for it. Our politicians did not believe in a separate state for muslims, so instead of seeing people die in the violence created by jinnah and his goon, they agreed to the partition to stop the bloodshed. our politicians were cornered left with no choice.

Abandon "No First Use" Policy by Prasad on 18 Nov 2009

India must abandon its "No first use" policy on nuclear weapons. It is no good being surrounded by nuclear armed sworn enemies (Pak, China and terrorists supported by them) and have "No first use" policy. If you are weaker than your enemy, you need at least that surprise factor. Given how the Indian politicians and armed forces react, I can guarantee that once India is bombed, the reaction will not be quick enough to save India from total annihilation. Hence, India must abandon "NO first use". Also, just as USA took its war to foreign shores, India shall do the same.

PAKISTAN'S NUCLEAR ARMOURY. by R Prasad on 18 Nov 2009

Pakistani leaders have determined to impose an impressive impression on the Muslim world by showing off its armoury of mass destructive weapons & to indicate its military capacity to lead the Muslim world to Counter the dominance of all other leading powerful nations & group of alliances. The US is underrating the threats emanating from Pakistan which have or have plans to have bases (with nuclear weapons) in the Mediterranean region targeting most of Europe & American interests in Africa. Negations with Pakistan will come to nothing as Pakistani leaders are using "Negotiations &/or Diplomacy" as an effective weapon for delaying tactics to strengthen its military strategies to strike at precise targets at the opportune time. Pakistani leaders have used the terrorists (labelled as non-State actors for escape route) to attack New York as an exercise in preparation for all out attack against any nations or groups of nations to counter their pre-eminence & dominance.

Pakistan has more nuclear weapons than India: Report by Rohit Kumar on 18 Nov 2009

Pakistan's nukes are not just numerically superior, but also have qualitative edge upon us. Let us accept the facts with cool and open mind. Our philosophy of putting down our enemy for 60 years is failed. Some say Pakistan got weapons from here and there, some say Pakistan is not growing in other areas. If the weapons had to be imported, with the wealth of oil, all the Arab countries and Iran should also have weapons by this time. Pakistan has turned the tables upon us after 1971 debacle. They had command and control system ready in 1991, while ours came into being few years back. Their defence spending is just under 4 billion, while ours is exceeding 30 billions. We thought we will remove Pakistan's equation with our economical growth. That is not happening either. Folks! We need to have a totally different strategy independent of our biased and stupid ideology. Accept the facts and deal with a nuclear enemy. Failiing to do so, continue to help China.

Nuclear Warhead by fakhrealam on 18 Nov 2009

It is not the matter or worry for our country if Pakistan has more nuclear warhead than us. Our country is bigger than Pakistan so they have need for that we have less it is enough for Pakistan no need or worry about this.

LACKING NUCLEAR SUPERMACY by syed maqsood hussain on 18 Nov 2009

SO WHAT ??? IF AMERICA, RUSSIA, CHINA OR EVEN PAKISTAN HAS MORE BOMBS THAN INDIA. IT DOES NOT MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE, WHAT IS MY PERSONAL OPINION IS THAT, NO ONE HAS ENOUGH BOMBS WHICH KILLS ALL THE INDIAN IN ONE LOT, WE WILL EMERGE WINNERS, IN THE MEAN TIME WHAT I AM REQUESTING WITH OUR COMMAND & CONTROL AUTOURITIES, WHO SO EVER ATTACK INDIA SHOULD BE RETALIATED WITH FULL FORCE BEFORE CONSIDERING ANY CONCEQUENCES.

CORDIAL RELATIONSHIP IS NECESSARY by TUWARAM DUTTA on 18 Nov 2009

We should not worry about this kind of report.Spending more money in neuclear weapons is going to retard our growth.Actually, some vested interest (US) circle are trying to escalate tension in between Pak. India, China. They donot want the progress of entire South Asia.We should deal all the matter diplomatically. We should try to develop cordial relationship with China & Pak. War is not the solution.China or Pak have the sense to understand this.

Change is inevitable by Avikal Gharad on 18 Nov 2009

Pakistan is a such country that is not at all growth oriented. They only know military growth. Most of the funds that they get are utilized in military development, making arms amunitions, nuclear weapons. So this is not a coincidence that they have more nuclear weapons than we have. Ours is a parallel development considering each sector. The thing is that we have the threat from both inside and outside. Inside I mean from every that entity that causes disruption of progress, may it be any naxalites, any corrupted leader, any public figure, even a common man who is responsible for the disruption. Outside is as obvious our so called and not called enemies. This can change. When, how, depends upon each individual mentioned above.
