Afghan President Hamid Karzai has said Pakistan's use of ‘extremism’ to foment trouble for its neighbours has begun to backfire, insisting that failure to rein in militancy would spell ‘gloom and doom’ for the region.

Karzai, who has frequently sparred with his Pakistani counterpart Pervez Musharraf on the issue cross-border terrorism, said the two neighbouring countries must join hands to eradicate extremism in the region.

"Unless we do that, the picture is one of doom and gloom - for Pakistan, and as a consequence for Afghanistan," Karzai was quoted as saying in the latest issue of Newsweek magazine.

The Afghan leader also said nations must not use extremism as a tool. "We cannot use extremism as a tool for any purpose. It will hurt us eventually, as it has begun to hurt Pakistan," he told the magazine.

Interestingly, Karzai and Musharraf shared a platform at the recently concluded World Economic Forum in Davos, where they addressed the issue of terrorism and the need for a global effort to fight the scourge.

Karzai said the Taliban, ousted from power by the US invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, was trying to stall progress in the country by trying to prevent reconstruction, killing and intimidating people and preventing children from going to school.

Without mentioning Pakistan by name, Karzai said militant groups ‘would not be strong without support’.

When pressed on Pakistan's possible involvement in fomenting terrorism in Afghanistan, Karzai said, "I've just had a very good trip to Pakistan, so what I would say is that Pakistan and Afghanistan and the US and the rest of the world must join hands in sincerity in order to end this problem."

Bluntly: Is it time to end Pakistan. by balushaan on 30 Jan 2008

The time is running fast on the clock from Pakistan. So many of its 'wise' leaders promoted hatered against India, and led to so much bloodshed of innocent, that the very purpose of it's creation has been lost, and it's actions defy it's very name. So much so, the demon of hatered and violence is taking toll on innocent Muslims who fail to heed the line of jihadis and terrorists. Is it time to declare end of Pakistan, and embrace a new era of love and prosperity by joining hands with it's parent India ! Old time wisdom should not eat dust in 'modern' times.

Pak's mischief on neighbours backfiring... by Ashok on 30 Jan 2008

These words show profound wisdom, I hope Pakistan will take notice before it is too late.

Re: I feel for ordinary Pakistani People by Guru on 30 Jan 2008

You reap what you sow.Pakistan as a nation was created by cutting off the limbs of a great nation and civilisation. As a result many Hindu's and Sikhs were massacered I won't shed a tear even if that whole nation reduced to rubble. It should and become a non-entity.

I feel for ordinary Pakistani People by An Indian on 29 Jan 2008

It is unfortunate that handful of feudal landlords and a cocky military is standing in the way of progress of 16 crore people majority of whom aspire for a good quality of life , food , shelter, education and health. They have lost the control of the nation which is now paying for the wrongdoings of 'so called leaders'. Pakistani people deserve more, and must rise and follow path of progress and peace. These handful of people should not be allowed to succeed in their mission.

They are fine. by Emy Campbell on 30 Jan 2008

Pkaistani people have got lot better quality of life, food, shelter, education and health as compared to other south asian countries. Not many people in Pakistan sleep on roads.Healthwise Pakistanis are very strong and good looking I have noticed when in Pakistan during my visit of south Asian region.

Genesis of Terror by MVC on 29 Jan 2008

I will add one more sentence to what Mr Karzai has already said, that Pakistan needs to spill some blood for its own creation of terrorist outfits!

Fight unitedly against extremism by RJ Khurana on 29 Jan 2008

President Karzai is right in saying that the Frankstein of Extremism created by Pakstan against its neighbours has come to haunt Pakistan in a big way and is about to devour it. This is an abject lesson for Pakistan that evil will always rebound. The right thing for Pakistan is to renounce all direct and indirect connections with extremists and fight it tooth and nail with all honesty. It is only complete and total renunciation of policy of extremism that will save Pakistan from extinction.
