Panchkula, March 18 Traffic jams and chaos greeted the candidates who filed their nominatios for the upcoming Municipal Council elections at the Mini Secretariat in Sector 1, Panchkula, on Tuesday.

The Panchkula police are all set to regulate the traffic flow and maintain law and order in the city during the election days.

The police have deployed 15 patrolling parties across the city and also asked for additional police force from the other districts.

Sources in the police department said that the cops are planning to make fool- proof arrangements to control any kind of untoward incident during the election days.

“A proper and extensive plan for maintaining law and order and manning the traffic during the canvassing period and election days has been finalised today. As per the plan, around 15 patrolling parties will be set up for the entire city with each patrolling party having four to five police officials headed by an assistant sub-inspector or sub-inspector,” a senior police official said.

Besides, a request to the director-general of police (DGP) has been sent for getting additional police force of approximately 200 police officials from the other districts, sources said.

The police will be going in for requisition of vehicles from the market under the election rules, which would be used for patrolling by the police in the city.

“To maintain the security conditions, every official will be provided with a walkie talkie, so that the police officials can be in constant touch,” the official added.

On the other hand, a lot of traffic and parking chaos was experienced in and around the Mini Secretariat on Tuesday.

“As many as 109 nominations were filed by various candidates, including the independent ones today. In all, the total number of nominations that have been filed in the last four days is 211,” said an official of the SDM office.

Talking to Newsline, a visitor to the Secretariat, Suresh Mehta, said: “It was a mess with traffic snarls all around the Secretariat today. Supporters in thousands were seen accompanying the candidates who filed their nominations. The traffic cops should have been deployed at all the major points to avoid the harassment that the other visitors of the secretariat had to face.”
