Mumbai, January 30 The man who stabbed a pani puri vendor over an argument at Link Road in Malad a few days back, got angry when the vendor asked him for Rs 5 that he owned him, say the police.

Salim Afghani (28), the accused, was arrested near Evershine Nagar in Malad on Monday.

According to the Malad police, on January 26 evening when Afghani went to Shiv Kumar Gupta’s (25) pani puri stall, the latter demanded the money that Afghani had to pay him. This enraged Afghani who got into an argument with the vendor and allegedly stabbed him with a sharp weapon, injuring him fatally. While in hospital, before succumbing to his injuries, Gupta in his statement to the police said that he had been assaulted because he had asked Afghani for his money.

Afghani, according to Police Inspector (Crime) Deepak Fatangare of the Malad police station, had on various occasions eaten at Gupta’s stall promising to pay the money later.

“Immediately after the murder, we were without a clue as no one seemed to know the whereabouts of Afghani, an alcoholic and occasional drug abuser. He is unemployed and does not have any fixed place of residence. However, he used to roam around in the Malvani area. He was nabbed when he came to the premises of the New Sonal Industrial Estate, the place where Gupta had his stall. Salim used to go there to ask for money from his brother, Javed, who works inside the industrial estate,” Fatangare said.
