Chandigarh, February 10 Panjab University has mooted a number of incentives to attract senior faculty for Dr H S Judge Institute of Dental Sciences and Hospital. These include accommodation, telephone, and academic allowance, among other perks.

The institute is facing problems to fill up the vacant posts of professors. Despite advertisements inviting applications for the posts, the university has not received a favourable response.

There are three posts of professors lying vacant in the institute. The only professor in the institute is Dr K Gauba who is also the Director. In the next session, the need for professors is likely to go up along with the rise in the number of students. In absence of senior faculty, problems could arise in the grant of approval from the Medical Council of India.

To tackle the problem, a committee under the chairmanship of PGI Director Dr K K Talwar was constituted. In a meeting held on January 14, the committee recommended that the faculty required certain incentives. It said that for the time being six E-I/E type accommodations could be allotted to senior faculty from the existing quota. The university could also consider construction of separate houses for them.

Another recommendation was that academic allowance could be given on the lines of the PGI. Telephone facility should be provided in their houses as per university rules.

The members also recommended that the incumbents to the post of professors be allowed hospital-based consultancy for two hours for an initial period of five years. The consultancy chargeable from the patients for different cases would depend on the treatment. The income generated would be divided between the treating clinician, Panjab University and para-medical supporting staff. Of this, 50 per cent would go to the clinician, 40 per cent to PU and 10 per cent to the assistants. The system could be reviewed after five years.
