Omar Abdullah

Jammu Former chief minister Farooq Abdullah was a doting father today and could not help hum a lilting tune from a popular Aamir Khan film to sing praise of his son Omar Abdullah after he became the new chief minister.

"Papa kehte hain bada naam karega, beta humara aisa kaam karega (Papa says son will do wonders with his work)," was how a beaming Farooq Abdullah summed up his emotions as he obliged reporters when he sang the hit number from the Hindi film 'Qayamat se Qayamat Tak'.

Farooq, a three-time chief minister and a known film buff with several friends in the Bollywood, was asked how he felt after his son took over the reins of the state.

But the father had a quick word of caution as well, when he quickly modified the lines from the same song to convey a subtle but lyrical message to his charismatic son.

"Kaam hai mushkil par beta naam karega... (the work is difficult but the son will accomplish it)," Farooq said of the third-generation Abdullah family member following the footsteps of the family peers.

Abdullah, who was present at the swearing-in ceremony of Omar, said he was confident that new Chief Minister would stand up to the expectations of people who have reposed confidence in his leadership.

Omar took over as the 11th Chief Minister of the state after his first victory in the recently concluded assembly elections.

Omar, who wants to be remembered as a "people's CM", said he had big plans for the state which is still jittery from the Amarnath Yatra land row that drove a deep wedge between the Jammu and the valley.

"I don't want to be seen as a Chief Minister but rather be remembered as servant of people," he said.
