New Delhi, January 22 Delhi Mayor Arti Mehra has come down heavily on the Delhi government over the setting up of the Parks and Garden Society. Mehra said today the Parks and Garden Society was yet another attempt on the part of the Delhi government to encroach upon the rights of the MCD. She said she would meet UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi over the issue.

“Maintaining parks is our work and not of the Delhi government. We have been working on the development of the 12,000 parks that are under us. We launched a scheme a few months back wherein RWAs were given Rs 60,000 a year to employ gardeners to maintain one-acre parks,” she said.

Mehra said at a time when there were strong sentiments for devolution of power to local representative institutions, the Congress-led Delhi government was trying to stifle local self-government in the Capital. “Sheila’s actions run contrary to the spirit of the 74th constitutional amendment aimed at empowering municipal governments,” she said.

Mehra said the Chief Minister had wrongly said the MCD had utilised only 30 per cent of its funds during the previous financial year. “We had utilised 62 per cent of the money by December 31,” she said.
