New Delhi Janata Dal (U) president Sharad Yadav, who said over a decade ago that he would not allow Parliament to be overrun by parkati auratein (liberated women), today threatened to commit suicide if the Bill reserving 33 per cent seats for women was passed in its present form.

“How can you ignore India’s reality and pass the women’s reservation Bill? We may not have the numbers but I will consume poison and die but not allow the passage of the Bill,” Yadav announced in the Lok Sabha while speaking during the debate on the motion of thanks to the President’s address.

The BJP, the JD(U)’s ally in the NDA, however, came out in support of the Bill. “BJP will certainly stand behind the government for the passage of the women’s reservation bill,” Arun Jaitley, Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, said. BJP Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha, Sushma Swaraj, acknowledged her party’s differences with the JD(U) over the Bill.

Yadav said the Congress was indulging in “tokenism” by appointing a woman President and Speaker instead of taking concrete steps to liberate poor and backward women.

“Caste is the biggest curse,” he said. “The caste system has been used to suppress a large section of women. Only when the caste system is demolished will the real women of India be empowered. It cannot be done through the tokenism that the Congress is resorting to.”

The women’s reservation Bill was mentioned by President Pratibha Patil in her address to both Houses of Parliament yesterday as part of the government’s 100-day agenda.

SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and RJD leader Lalu Prasad Yadav have been powerful opponents of the Bill in the past. Asked if he would continue to oppose the Bill, Lalu said on Friday that he would take a decision after the bill is tabled in the House.

Mr. Sharad yadav is very correct by opposing the women's bill. Do these womens need reservations to come up,Meira kumar, Pratibha Patil has no reservations. They have come up by their merits or by chief leader's proximoity. No need to reservations for any one. Do let come everyone by their hard work and labour. These political parties are making these bills only for vote bank. oppose them publically. we unite.. and oppose such bills which are making gender differences like the caste reservations. Yadav's suicide threat by J.M.Manchanda on 05 Jun 2009

The Yadavs have been virulently opposed to Women's reservation for reasons best known to them but Sharad Yadav's recent outburst borders on blackmail. The Bill should be considered on merits by members of parliament and if found desirable, passed. The present number of women in lower house of parliament (50 among 500 ) does not do justice to their popolation ratio and must be corrected. If the worst happens and Sharad Yadav actually fades into oblivion, no tears need be shed. Everything must pass with time and for social reforms, a price has to be paid.

Mr. Sharad Yadav, there are many methods of making potent poisons available on the net. Use them. Please don't try overdosing on sleeping pills - it never works and will only prove you are a sissy. To really say f-u to parliamentary process, put a gun to your forehead and pull the trigger.

Sharad Yadav must be packed for Agra by Naim Naqvi on 05 Jun 2009

As long as someone expresses his views within the norms of civil society and democratic polity against an action or thought which is ideologically opposed, it can be respected if not accepted. He has and had every right to express his reservations but within the confines of law. Sharad Yadav's statement at the floor of parliament is demeaning to the temple of democracy. He is reminding me the dramas Sant Fateh Singh used to play in late sixties. I think the correct place for this kind of politician-cum-idiot is not the parliament of our country but some insane asylum. His very intention reflects a sick mind. Will somebody help him ????I think Mr. Nitish Kumar could help him to show the high way of party.

Suicide of Mr. Yadav by Roshanlal on 05 Jun 2009

This fellow should be arrested and put behind bar for hollow threats. He is dangerous for social peace and harmony. Expressing intention of suicide is also a punishable crime.

hopeless leaders by mayank mishra on 05 Jun 2009

it is too eazy to play fool with the uneducated voters of the constituency and get into the elite class of parliamentarians but it takes mamooth amount of caliber to play a constructive role inside it and this is what is tru of most of the leaders not all representing backward areas and mr. yadav is one of those coming in ambit of this principle so we can only expect this sort of timidness from him , sensing the future danger of being challenged by an array of women taking the baton.
