Gujinder Singh had boarded a flight to London on July 29 after he was cleared by the immigration officials at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport.
When he reached the Heathrow Airport, officials there found that he was not carrying his passport and other documents.
Sources said that Singh had deliberately destroyed all his documents on the flight as he wanted to seek an asylum in the UK.
He is at present under detention at the Heathrow Aiport.
“When Singh boarded the flight on July 29 at the Kolkata airport, he carried all the documents,” said Basab Takuldar, Deputy Commissioner (security control) and foreigners’ regional registration officer.
If any person lands at the Kolkata airport without requisite documents, he is immediately sent back by the same airline and the airline company is held responsible for carrying the person, he added.
The British High Commission has sent a show-cause notice to Air India through their airline liaison officer in Delhi, Sarah Spence.
They have asked the airline company to investigate into the matter.
Sources said that if Singh is denied asylum, he might be sent back to the originating country (India) and a penalty up to 30,000 euros might be imposed on the airlines company.
Air India, however, has denied any such incident and has shrugged off the responsibility.
Businessman held at airport
A 40-year-old Durban-based businessman was arrested at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose airport on Wednesday for tampering with his passport. Mullah Ahmed, a garment trader from Durban, had arrived on a Jet Airways flight from Dhaka around 4 pm.
