BMC hydraulic engineer M M Kamble said though the civic administration has been regularly warning water users against non-payment in its bills, it will now do so through advertisements in newspapers. “We are issuing warning against non-payment of bills so that people and agencies don’t complain when their water supply is disconnected,” he said. When the civic body disconnected water supply to Western Railway about four years back, there was problems in operating the Rajdhani Express, Kamble said. He added that to disconnect water connections of government agencies, decision will have to be taken at a senior level. “But if the arrears are not paid, we will have to go ahead with the disconnection,” he said.
There are 3.5 lakh water connections in the city and the BMC collects around Rs 700 crore per annum as water charges. On an average, every year the civic administration disconnects around 400-500 water connections.
