Patiala, March 12 In the recent past, Punjab has earned the infamous distinction of reporting a rise in cases of domestic violence.

A legal awareness camp on ‘Protection of Women from Domestic Violence and Protection of Consumers’ was organised by the Punjabi University’s Department of Law today.

University Vice-Chancellor Jaspal Singh said simply having intellectual discourses based on rights of protection as mentioned in the constitution was not enough. “What is more important is creating awareness and putting the efforts into practice,” he said.

He added that women themselves had to come forward to put an end to this fast-spreading menace, especially among the poor and illiterate sections of the society.

Punjabi University also plans to make the people conscious of their rights as consumers and the mechanism of redressing their grievances, Singh added.

Department head Gurpal Kaur Khehra said that the faculty and the students of the department were making efforts to fight this social problem.

Charanjit Singh, head of the evening section of the department, said that efforts were being made at the global level as well by establishing fast-track institutions to provide justice to suffering women.

University Registrar S.S. Khehra also spoke on the occasion.
