Peepli Live theme should’ve been NREGA, not farmer suicide: Advani

New Delhi Aamir Khan once drew the BJP’s ire for his support to the Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) and his criticism of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi. But it seems that both the BJP and the Bollywood actor has now decided to move on.

While Khan arranged for a special screening of Peepli Live for NDA MPs last week, top leader L K Advani — who watched the movie — on Sunday praised Khan’s home production for its “realistic depiction of village life”.

Advani, however, felt the filmmakers should have chosen a subject other than farmers’ suicide.

In his latest blog entry, Advani points out that Peepli Live would have been “very effective” had it chosen a subject like NREGA as its central theme.

Advani said he was “greatly impressed” by the caricature the film had made out of the rivalry of TV channels, and among politicians. “But I wish for the main theme of the story, the filmmakers had chosen some subject other than farmers’ suicide.”

“I told Aamir: I have been to villages in Andhra and Vidarbha where many such suicides have taken place. And I can imagine how distressed these families would feel if they were to see the film and find the tragedies they have passed through were being made an object of mockery. The film would have been very effective if it had chosen some subject like NREGA as the central theme,” Advani wrote.

Advani said the latest production of Khan showed once again that he is a “rare filmmaker” who never hesitates to experiment with off-beat stuff.  He said the villages, which filmgoers generally see in Bollywood movies, are phoney, studio outfits. Peepli Live was a sharp contrast. “It was a starkly realistic depiction of village life,” he said.

Khan had to face the fury of the BJP — particularly its Gujarat unit — some years ago after he backed the NBA and criticised Modi in the context of the 2002 riots. The youth wing of the BJP had then even objected to screening of one of his films in the state.

Advani Is Now A Spokesperson Of The UPA Government by Sudhir P, Gurgaon on 31 Aug 2010

With each passing day, since Elections 2009, it is becoming abundantly clear that Advani has been totally under the influence of the congress-led UPA government. First, the old man would not raise any issues regarding wilful lapses/scams of this government be it- IPL Scam,CWG Scam,Sky-Rocketing prices,2G/3G scam, etc. and now, influences other BJP leaders also to desist from raising issues against the UPA government. The old man now, extols the NREGA scheme of the UPA. The major issue of election-fixing thru EVMs, by congress, has not even had a passing reference by this old clown. It is clear that without EVMs congress can never win and Advani is ensuring that BJP is totally wiped out. With people like Advani around the BJP does need congress or others for it to be decimated.

Dear Politicians by SAM on 30 Aug 2010

Peepli LIve Shows the truth of poor Farmers and also the truth of Media and the politicians . IT should be a shame to all of us to have such stigma right at the basic level and should take remorse from it rather than tell someone to make things which suits the agenda. MR PM what will be your take on that probably another statement for the record books.

Farmers plight by narendra on 30 Aug 2010

Sir, the politicians do take rounds to the villages. Their visits are organised. After they leave with promises, nothing happens. Schemes which they approve never take off, without very few exceptions. There is a gross inefficiency in supervision & implementation. Study the case of; subsidy that was to be distributed to the farmers for onions in Maharashtra. Hardly anyone cares & reaches to the villagers. The best solution to this problem is let the farm produce prices be determined by market forces without state interventions. Let farmers pay income tax. The income tax waiver to agricultural income is because of influential people like politicians , corrupt officers & professionals who use it to save taxes. Hardly any farmer earns taxable amount of income. Peepli Live has atleast attracted attention of common urban population. The rural population must be relieved that at least there plight has been demonstrated by this movie.

NREGA by Avinash Tomar on 30 Aug 2010

I think politicians should also check the updates of NREGA Website.Even there is no data on NREGA website on links. However, Peepli live is reality of India and politicians should accept gloomy conditions of their villages. Instead of appreciating the theme of peepli live, politicians are providing statements. we would appreciate, if he would have been told that they need to work on grassroot level of their villages and should provide some kind of new plans for the people of below poverty line. At last, hats off to Amir khan for peepli live or India Live
