New Delhi, February 18 A peon of a bank was today killed when a security guard’s service rifle accidentally went off near the bank in central Delhi, police said.

Police said the guard has been booked for causing death due to negligence at Karol Bagh Police Station and has been arrested.

The incident took place at around 5 pm in IDBI bank’s Karol Bagh branch when Vinay Kumar Sharma was reportedly cleaning the barrel of his .12 bore rifle at the main gate of the branch. The peon, Chandra Dev (40), was also standing next to him.

Officials said Sharma reportedly forgot to lock his rifle before cleaning. He accidentally fired and the bullet hit Dev under his left eye. He was rushed to a hospital but was declared dead. The postmortem will be conducted at LNJP Hospital tomorrow.
