Perth Test: I am the main culprit, says MS Dhoni

Perth Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni today took the blame on himself for a disastrous performance of his team against Australia, saying that he was the main culprit as the captain.

"I need to blame myself as I am the leader of this side. Of course, I am the main culprit, so yes I blame myself," Dhoni said at the post-match press conference here.

Dhoni also defended the seniors batsmen who have come under sharp criticism for consistently failing in Australia as well as preceding series in England.

Asked whether the seniors should be phased out, Dhoni said that should come up only after the end of the series.

"We will have to see what is the thought of seniors. It has to be a very careful decision that needs to be taken. They have experience, they can share it with youngsters," he said.

Dhoni said the main reason behind the debacle has been the failure to score enough runs consistently.

"If you see the games that we had played in England, the Test matches here, it is only the one reason -- we have not put enough runs on the board, something that we need to be careful about because we want to give the bowlers that amount of runs to get the opposition out," he said.

"One or two bad innings, it can happen in Test cricket, but overall, the seven test matches, this is a bit too long for the batting line up to flop," Dhoni added.

Dhoni said it was one of the worst phase for Indian cricket and blamed the batsmen for failing them.

"The amount of cricket I have seen, this is definitely one of the worst phase where we have not done consistently well. We have not put runs on the board. Bowling, I think because of injuries, we suffered a set back, over here, we have not been as consistent," he said.

"Overall, I don't think bowling is a real worry, we have not been consistently batting well, our line-up flopping consistently."

Asked about the calls by former players for axing of some senior cricketers after the debacle in Australia, Dhoni said that such a decision would have to be taken with the players sitting together with the BCCI.

"As for dropping the legends of the game, it would be a process, not an event. I have not sat and thought over it. Everybody needs to be a part of it, players and BCCI at the same time. It's about taking right decisions. People went after Virat to be dropped and he batted really well in this Test," Dhoni said.

"May be at the end of the series (on discussing the future of seniors). It's also about what seniors are feeling. It seems there is a lot of stress on how to get rid of the seniors. As I said, it would be a very careful decision given what they have done for the country and given the experience they have which they can share with youngsters," he said.

He, however, was not in favour of phasing out all the senior players, saying that the team needs them for the youngsters to learn the ropes.

"You can't have all the seniors missing out at the same time. We have to be careful. You want to give exposure to youngsters but you also want a good mix of seniors," said the skipper.

"The experience these guys have, once they share this experience with youngsters, the job of youngsters become easy. You don¿t need to play 100 games to be experienced. If you share whatever questions you have with these experienced players, the job of youngsters become easy.

"If you see all the three players we have got, if they don't score a 100 or 50, we feel they haven't score runs. If you see last couple of series, they haven't done well but it's to their averages and amount of runs they have scored they have not done well. They must be feeling the pressure but it's very common to them. Throughout their career they have faced that kind of pressure," said Dhoni.

Most of the Indian cricket fans are not aware of the basic concept of cricket. hahahahahah

We can sacrifice 5 test series by winning the world cup2011. Dhoni is a brainee cricketer, its just a matter of bad patch. If things are not going well evryone will try to teach you. Remember It was Dhoni's captaincy under which Indian team thrashed Aus,Pakistan,SA,England and lifted the WC2011. NO COMMENTS ON DHONI

Another Sudhir Naik? by agni on 15 Jan 2012

Gavaskar surprised cricket world by including his friend Sudhir Naik for tests in England in the seventies. I hope that Dhoni was not instrumental in picking Vinay Kumar, an absolute university-level player. After his first delivery a shocked Wasim Akram was heard saying:"126km? At test level?". We lost a good chance to initiate Aron.

Fittest will survive. ONce Sachin Dravid and Laxman gone India in its current state can be after Bangladesh, Cananda,Ireland etc. What we need is do our best. We can ber critical positively and we do not need any negative comments. Let us wish the team all the best. CHAKE DE INDIA

Get Real India by Mark of Perth on 15 Jan 2012

Really - any lauding of your cricket team should be stripped retrospectively guys! Lets look at your test record (Test cricket is the one true form of the sport where fortunes can wane from one session to the next - rather than the shorter version where lose a few wickets and its over!) Every cricket player will agree. Now time for some self examination please India! Over the history of test cricket you have only won in Aus, Eng, SA & WI (true cricket power houses outside of sub continent) - YOU HAVE ONLY WON 17 TESTS! Even the great side of Aus in the late 90's to recent times still not truly rate themselves UNTIL they WON a SERIES in India! Yes it's hard to win abroad - but to be called GREAT you must perform on wickets not just the friendly docile turners your pitches have become! And you don't have an Away Test for 2 years after Aus? COME ON GET SERIOUS! Bring back some of your indian teams of the past that showed back bone and substance!

Mick the idiot by Matt on 15 Jan 2012

Mick, don't embarass fellow Aussies with your gloating cheapshots. The match would have played very differently without Warner and Cowan's partnership. How about you just be a gracious winner like me and most other Aussies, shutup, and go troll on some other website. You're the only loser on show here.

No one can win all the matches..... by Indian on 15 Jan 2012

Re: No one ca etc etc by Another Indian on 15 Jan 2012

YEAH-HA-HA. Well said. Indians can't win test matches cause we can't play test matches. But be ready to face us in 20-20. And be ready to fave a 5 year old girl in hopscotch.

Dhoni is a worst player and no technics in batting by uthaman on 15 Jan 2012

Hold IPL/CL in Aus by Ind on 15 Jan 2012

BCCI must hold IPL or Champions League in Australia.

Sachin's Century by Shamuk on 15 Jan 2012

We should not brood over this defeat or the imminent one in the next test. Losing test match is no bad thing. Look ahead. Someday against Bangladesh, Sachin is going to score his hundredth century. Let us wait. Meanwhile the news is that Dhoni is celebrating his ban (who want to captain this Indian team?. And problem for Shrikant is that he can not drop Saurav Ganguly for the poor performance.

Losers by Mick on 15 Jan 2012

So Sehwag will captain India for the next test - if they follow his lead the test wont even make 3 days - C'mon Aussie C'mon ! ! !

Dhoni and Team. by sanjay on 15 Jan 2012

If politician's are leading the BCCI,only politics will prevail in Indian cricket.India needs gutsy players like Mohinder Amarnath,Gaekwad,Kapil Dev,Vishwanath,Kirmani and not the scared goats like dravid, laxman, sachin, dhoni and sehwag.

scared goats? by shanthanu on 15 Jan 2012

Just a few days back we were celebrating these heros and one failure they are good for nothing. It is not the mistake of the team, it is the mistake of selectors who disregarded performing players like Oza, Arora etc. and hanged on to old players whose reflexes are certainly fading that too on a bouncy wicket.

Debacle in perth by hariharan on 15 Jan 2012

It is nobody's fault it is that Australia are having four pacers who r pouncing at u at 140-145 km speed all the time. Why our players should get hurt when they have earned heavily and will continue to do so unless the channels and our poor people stop covring/watching them

Sachin by Ravi on 15 Jan 2012

Sachin is here only 2finish his 100th ton such a super Player should stand to its testimony to save the country ..Neverthless u can expect him to make victory r big title for India.

Sachin sucks by manish on 15 Jan 2012

sachin is a terrible, over-rated player..Super selfish he only plays for his own records. Most of his runs are at home and vs. stupid oppositions like bangaldesh. He never wins a single match for india.

tough call Mr. Dhoni by samvadi on 15 Jan 2012

Sure wouldn't like to be in Mr. Dhoni's shoes now - with so many malfunctioning legends in the side. Appreciate his impeccable reasoning - simple and straightforward. Would love it if he could apply it to the selection policy - if someone is not performing he should be dropped. it's just not VVS, RDr, SRT but Sehwag should be under the scanner. He's been exposed in tough batting conditions. Evidently, hand-eye co-ordination does weaken with age. that is why batsmen need a solid technique to back it up. Sehwag dosen't seem to have either as of now! There is a case for Rahane and Rohit Sharma to be tried out at Adelaide. And Ojha too. Anyways - Dhoni is going to need all the luck there. Aussies are playing very well indeed.

more centuries wont make a batsmen great! by Mangudy Ramamurthy on 15 Jan 2012

22 years of Sachin's participation in Indian cricket India yet to win a test series against Australia and South Africa. Do we need 100th century or win ?

Dhoni's post-match statement by bala on 15 Jan 2012

It is not enough to share / accept the blame. Leader need to know when to quit. Just be away from test matches. You can not be a good captain there. Test matches are real cricket and no one can survive long there without real skill.

Debalce of Indian cricket by KaranthKL on 15 Jan 2012

What we saw today is replica of Indian performance few years ago.Kapil performed.Azar ruined the the team.Kapil was almost made scapegoat in match fixing but Azar scot free with sangeetha.Ganguly built the team sacked by BCCI with the support of Greg chappel and SRKhan.Dhoni came and won the world cup.Debacle followed.Inidam media interveiwd opinion asked with austrelian and pakistan palyers opinion given but could not win a test match.History repeats again.IPL is all about money and women and wine.We have money do not know how use it in scientific way.We have coach, physiotherapist and psychologist nothing worked It worked with J Wright and Kursten. Not with Fletcher.Wersterners have unnderstood our psyche ,but we are not.Globally Indians are second class citizens,it is made us to feel,on the face of it not told.

Truth bitter by shanthanu on 15 Jan 2012

There is substance in what you say after reading every day that some Indian is being harrassed in some corner of the world. It must have got into the psyche of our players as well.

Useless BCCI and Selfish Sachin by Jothi on 15 Jan 2012

As long as the selfish Sachin, Dravid and Laxman are there, India will never win the match. Sachin now slowly becomes ab obstacle and nuisance to the team for his greedy selfish goal. Either he should retire from the Cricket paving the way for youngsters OR he should be removed by by the BCCI. Due to his political clout and friendly media, he is not willing to retire. Shame on you Sachin........ Why don't we try with youngsters.

Sachin is not God by Avinash on 15 Jan 2012

We Indians are crazy in one way. We were worshiping Sachin when he was genuine contributor. We can debate about his retirement and expect same nothing wrong about it but we have no right to curse him and talk too emotinal about his performance. He should be considered a professional like everybody of us and should be treated like one. We should avoid prasing individuals and worshiping them emotionally when they are in form at the same time should restrain from abusing him when out of form. If he is not performing he should be rested like any ordinary player. That is logical and proper. Who are we to curse any body when problems are with all of us. we make them star and raise our expectations. He can have bad patch and can underperform sometimes. ...

Whom to blame? by shanthanu on 15 Jan 2012

Don't you see media also has contributed this 'rise to the sky when performed and drop to the hell when not in form 'syndrome?

Sachin the greedy urchin by Amar on 15 Jan 2012

Absolutely correct. The moment this guy retires soon from all forms, India can have good future.

over rated sachin by anil malhotra on 15 Jan 2012

I TOTALLY AGREE.WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME SACHIN WON A MATCH FOR INDIA ...IN MY OPINION KALLIS IS BETTER THAN SACHIN IF YOU COUNT THE MATCHES HE HAS WON OR SAVED FOR SOUTH AFRICE

Lets move on by Rapamum on 15 Jan 2012

BCCI should schedule a test with Bangladesh so that Sachin can get the 100th 100 and then lets move ahead

Best Batting Performance by Ravi on 15 Jan 2012

Dear Jothi, Please tell me who batsman who has stored max run from Indian side in this series. Then talk what you want to do with Sachin...really people like you are poor guys...

Why are you blaming Sachin? by Rajive Sharma on 15 Jan 2012

BCCI makes low and slow pitches and then expect their batsmen to perform in Australia. If anybody has made some runs in this series then he is Tendulkar. When will Indians grow up and stop blaming Sachin? Cricket is a team sport everybody needs to perform. Sachin is not god and he can't win every match for India. Start blaming openers for this disaster.
