Petroleum Minister Murli Deora awarded 18 allotment papers to families of NSG commandos Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan and Gajendra Singh, police personnel Tukaram Ombale and Maruti Kamte, ATS chief Hemant Karkare, Mumbai Police Inspector Vijay Salaskar and Additional Commissioner of Police, Ashok Kamte among others.

Major Unnikrishnan's father, however, told reporters after the function that he will give the dealership away to the Army. "I have got enough... I would give it to the army."

The land for the retail outlets will be given by the state government.

Of the alloted outlets, land for four petrol pumps and four CNG stations is within the city. The remaining 10 retail outlets are outside the city but within Maharashtra.

Kavita Karkare, the widow of Hemant Karkare, and Vijay Salaskar's wife and daughter too attended the function.

Deora told the gathering that the government has set up a committee for creation of a fund that will look after the education needs of the children of the slain security personnel.

The government has appointed HDFC Chairman Deepak Parekh as head of this committee. "The fund is to the tune of Rs 3-4 crore," the minister said.
