Play portrays plight of woman in male-dominated society

Ludhiana, February 22 A cultural evening was organised by the Centre for Communication and International Linkages, Directorate of Student’s Welfare, and Department of Entomology, as part of a series of functions planned to observe the birth centenary of Dr M.S. Randhawa, former PAU vice-chancellor.

A variety of events such as presentation of panorama showing Punjabi culture including “jaago,” a slide show, poetry and a one-act play entitled, “Bus hun hor nahin”. The play, written by Prof Sarabjit Aulakh and directed by Dr Anil Sharma, highlighted the gender bias against women in the contemporary society. It highlighted the raw deal being meted out to the fairer sex in the male dominated society. The play was enacted by the PAU students, he said.

Dr Manjit Singh Kang, the PAU vice-chancellor, admired the students who acted in the play that showcased the atrocities being meted out to women, saying that cultural shows provided opportunity to project the essence of culture. While pointing out that Dr Randhawa was a strong protagonist of women rights, he said that women empowerment thorough their economic and social well-being should be an agenda before educationists, social workers and policy makers.

After lighting a lamp in front of the portrait of Dr Randhawa to mark the beginning of the cultural evening, Dr. Kang, Dr. Neeta D. Kang, Dr. P.S.Minhas, Dr. M.S.Aulakh, Dr. D.S.Brar offered floral tribute to Dr. Randhawa.

A former professor of entomology, Dr Gurdev Singh Sandhu recited a poem, especially composed on the life and achievements of Dr Randhawa. Dr R.K. Saini of Haryana Agricultural University (HAU) enthralled the audience with his song.

Dr. Anjum Sohail, leader of a delegate from Pakistani, said that the plight of women on both sides of the border was similar even as he shared some jokes and couplets with the audience. N.S. Nanda of Dhan Pothohar Brotherhood, Punjab, too spoke on the occasion.

Dr N.S. Butter, head of the Department of Entomology, presented his vote of thanks to all the participants.
