New Delhi, January 3 With the arrest of three persons, the southwest district police claim to have busted a gang of burglars, who specialised in breaking ATM machines.

Police officers also said a stolen amount of Rs 3,55,000 was recovered during the operation.

According to the officers, they had received a complaint on December 30 regarding theft of Rs 1,84,000 from an ICICI ATM in Vasant Kunj's B-7 market. On interrogation, Vidya Sagar, the guard on duty at the time of theft, said three employees of a firm responsible for ATM maintenance had come to the ATM that day.

“Sagar identified three persons who had come that day — Prashant Sharma, Mohit Malik and Dinesh Kumar. They were immediately arrested,” DCP (southwest) Shalini Singh said.

The police said they confessed to their crime during interrogation and also revealed that they had stolen Rs 4,40,000 from an ICICI ATM in Chandni Chowk.

Officers said the accused are graduates from Charan Singh University and hail from Baghpat in UP. “They didn't find it difficult to access the ATM machines. They would close the shutter of the ATM on the pretext of repairing it and would steal money,” Singh said.
