Rajkot, July 26 The villages of Surednranagar district were illegally lifting water from the Maliya canal by setting up pumps, to save their crops. Due to this illegal water lifting, the Naramda authorities were not able to maintain the water level in the canal, which resulted in insufficient and irregular water supply to Rajkot and other cities.

After several complaints by the Rajkot Municipal Corporation to the Narmada ministry about irregular water supply, now the police have been deployed on the canal to maintain a vigil on the water theft.

A unit of the border wing and a huge police staff has been deployed to maintain around the clock vigil on the canal. Irate farmers of Halwad taluka villages, including Nava Ghatila, Anjar, Makhiyad and Tikar from where this canal passes through, have opposed this police deployment. Jethabhai Manjibhai, Bhartiya Kisan Sangh leader of Halwad taluka, said: “We had spoken to the Narmada water officials who had denied providing water even to those farmers who paid for lifting water from the canal. Now the scarcity of irrigation water has become a secondary issue for the government so we have no choice but to suffer and wait for the rains.”'

According to IGP Rajkot V V Rabari, at present, one company of the border wing and 100 police staff of both Rajkot district and Surendranagar district have been deployed on the canal.

“When the severe drinking water problem began in Rajkot and Jamnagar, we were forced to take action to stop illegal lifting of water from the canal. We have seized many pumps which were set up illegally on the canal. This staff will maintain vigil with the help of 10 motorcycles and four patrolling vans round the clock,” he said.
