Kolkata, February 12 A day after the body of Rakesh Gupta — a company secretary working with a private firm — was recovered from a village in North 24 Parganas, the police are still clueless about the motive behind the murder.

“We have not got any lead. No document was found in his pocket. His cell phone and purse are also missing. After examining call details of his mobile phone, we will be in a position to ascertain the cause of the murder,” said Superintendent of Police (North 24 Parganas) Supratim Sarkar.

Police found that his mobile was active at New Barrackpore at 3.45 pm — almost two hours after he went missing on Sunday afternoon.

The police now suspect that 40-year-old Gupta was having an extra-marital affair that could have led to his murder. The investigators have found a woman’s dress material from the sack that contained the victim’s body.

Meanwhile, police have started interrogating some women who were known to the deceased. Some of them are his colleagues, said a police officer.

The police, however, could not gather any information about Gupta’s relation with any other woman even after questioning his friends, colleagues and relatives.

On Tuesday, police visited Gupta’s residence and seized a computer, two diaries and two files marked as ‘personal’. They are yet to speak with his pregnant wife, Babita Gupta.

“She is not in a position to speak. Once she is better, we will take her statement. If required, we will interrogate his sister and brother-in-law as well,” said an officer.

Investigations have revealed that Gupta had taken a loan of Rs 2.40 lakh from a bank and had booked a flat at Baguiati for Rs 50,000. On Sunday, an LIC agent also visited his residence.

Gupta had gone missing on Sunday after he dropped his mother at the Kolkata airport.

A day later, pieces of his body were found in two sacks near the nullah at Metal Road near Bilkanda-Muragacha area under the Ghola police station area.

Police are, however, almost sure that Gupta was killed somewhere else and his body was dumped there.
