City police’s Special Crime Investigation Cell has zeroed in on seven suspects, who allegedly paid lakhs to the prime accused, Joginder Dahiya, to procure question papers for the test.
Sandeep, a resident of Panchkula, who topped the exam and UT Police Constable Sunil Kumar have emerged as prime suspects in the case.
Kumar has been absent from duty, ever since the police initiated a probe into the scam.
“We will get Dahiya’s custody from the court on February 28, which would further unveil the truth. But we are keeping a close watch on the suspected men’s activities,” said a senior policeofficer closely associated with the investigation of the case.
Sources disclosed that out of the seven candidates identified, four were recruited as constables in Chandigarh Police in 2005.
They are the same batch as Constable Shamsher Singh, who was arrested yesterday. Police said he was a key person in the scam.
Interestingly, all the candidates under scanner are also residents of villages near Singh’s native village.
“Certain discrepancies have been observed during the investigation. Of course, the toppers are the prime suspects but there could be a few genuine candidates as well. There may be a few black sheep in our organisation as well, who would be exposed once Dahiya is thoroughly interrogated,” said a police officer posted with Special Crime Investigation Cell.
