Amritsar, March 2 An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI), Kuldeep Singh, was suspended, while Balkar Singh, SHO of D-Division, was transferred to the police lines today after the city residents gheraoed the police station with the body of an elderly woman, Amarjit Kaur (65), for over five hours.

There was a traffic jam, as the angry residents shouted slogans against the police. Sources said the incident occurred after the police went to arrest Rakesh Kumar, grandson of the woman, in connection with a controversy pertaining to Ravi Das Temple in the city between two groups. The police had registered a cross-case against Rakesh Kumar and Angrez Singh.

The woman had died today morning and the family was getting ready for the cremation when the police reached to arrest Rakesh. This incensed the kin and area residents, who staged a protest against the attitude of the police. However, the police did not arrest Rakesh, while Angrez Singh has been nabbed.
