New Delhi, January 8 Police officers on night duty are becoming more vulnerable to accidents even as Delhi Police Commissioner YS Dadwal is pushing hard for night patrolling and checks on major roads.

Barely a month after four policemen were seriously injured by a Maruti Esteem at Lodhi Road, two police officers of Vasant Vihar police station survived another mishap when an over-speeding car hit police barricades. The incident took place around midnight. The police said the driver even did not stop after hitting the barricades.

ASI Kishan Lal and Head Constable Yashveer Singh were posted at Poorvi Marg police picket on the intervening night of January 4 and 5 from 11 pm to 5 am. They were reportedly standing on the picket when a Honda City sped in from A- block Vasant Vihar direction. “The car was driven in a zigzag way,” said a police officer. The driver hit and broke the barricade’s light. ASI and Head constable just managed to save themselves. They managed to note down the car’s number DL4CP 9850.

Later the occupant of the car, Amit Sharma, a resident of Vasant Vihar was arrested. Police officers said that he was not drunk but was driving rashly. He has been booked for rash and negligent driving at Vasant Vihar police station.

Meanwhile, police have yet to arrest anyone for the December 16 accident at Lodhi. Police have also verified 350 Maruti Esteems.

On December 16, at around 2.30 am, Head Constable Ramesh, Constable Rameshwar and Home Guard Harish Kumar were on routine check of vehicles at Lodhi Road when a car hit them. A photographer was also injured. All four were admitted to the Trauma Centre where Harish is still in the ICU while Ramesh is recovering. The other two have been discharged.

Police said that there are no specific leads on the registration number of car, whether it is UP, Haryana or Delhi number. “We have checked almost every garage in the outskirts and there is also a reward worth Rs 25,000 for providing information about the car,” said an officer. Police officers, now posted on pickets, said that they have to be extra cautious since people are drunk at night.

Out on night patrol, cops hit in Mayur Vihar
Constables Ramesh Chand and Ravi Dutt were seriously injured on Monday night after a Maruti 800 hit them at the police picket in Mayur Vihar Phase One. The district DCP Ajay Chaudhary had reportedly given orders for special checking at night in east Delhi. When both the constables tried to stop the car, the driver accelerated and hit them. The driver managed to flee from the spot. Dutt could not manage to note the number of the car. A PCR van rushed the spot and admitted both the constables in Jeevan Anmol Hospital. Chand received a head injury while Dutt hurt his leg. The police is searching for the white Maruti 800.
