Mumbai, March 20: India's one-day captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni says the tri-series victory in Australia has vindicated his decision to leave out premier batsmen Saurav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid from the competition.

India beat world champions Australia 2-0 in the finals earlier this month after the selectors pitched for youth at Dhoni's behest and controversially dropped former captain Ganguly despite the left-hander's consistency at test level.

Ganguly and Dravid, who was the first to feel the heat of the one-day shake-up late last year, are two of just three Indians to score over 10,000 runs in one-day cricket.

"I was pretty clear about the players I wanted in the side," Dhoni told Cricinfo web site."That's what I said to the selectors as well. You can see the kind of team I got."

The axing of Ganguly and Dravid set off a nation-wide debate in cricket-mad India given the challenge of playing in Australia.

"It's very important because the process and the timing were criticised a lot," Dhoni said. "But sometimes it is very important to send the message across, because sometimes people neglect the answer."

Dhoni, 26, was made one-day captain after Dravid quit following the England tour in September last year and guided a young team to a surprise triumph at the inaugural Twenty20 World Cup.

Dhoni said he had asked his players in Australia to stand up with questions being raised about his team selection.

"What now? Why are people not asking the same questions now? Because if the result was not in our favour, what would have happened?" he said.

Arrohance of Dhoni by seth on 21 Mar 2008

The team is to be selected on Merit and who will win the match. If age is the criteria - why 26 not 16.. Dhoni is not a match winner at all or any of the Yuvi or others. A skipper should behave as a leader of the team.

haha by vimalan on 21 Mar 2008

Mr Prabhakar and Dinesh, do you know who played the most important role in the CB series victory?? its Sachin and not your Dhoni or any other so-called youngster. Its people like you who don't understand the difference between test odi and 20-20 come up with this kind of nonsense. I would say a world cup final is anytime greater than a 20-20 cup win and these seniors have that in their cupboard..let these youngsters play the real cricket "Test" cricket and prove themselves without seniors like Sachin or a Kumble or a Dravid or a Laxman or a Ganguly, you wanna bet?..we saw how well your Dhoni and Yuvi played in the test series down under..haha

Dhoni, Sachin and the Seniors by Sridhar on 20 Mar 2008

Is Sachin also a junior player? Where woud the CB series be without the huge contribution from Sachin. Or has Dhoni altered Sachin's DOB to include him as a junior. Stop Bragging Dhoni, otherwise peole will lose respect for you.

Who made the runs??? by Dharmesh Bhrdwaj on 20 Mar 2008

Well if it was not Sachin Tendulker's run, India would have not won.Plain and simple.

Youngster in team by dinesh on 20 Mar 2008

I fully agree what prabhakar has to say. These so called seniors will not leave till they drop dead on pitch. Brilliant youngster will suffer. Look what they are doing to Gambhir.Only in india highest run getter of the series can be dropped. This is because seniors and so called old greats put pressure on selectors. Dhoni is right. Those who criticised selectors and Dhoni for opting for young team must praise the accomplishments now but they are hidning in their bill and will return to crow crow if the young team fials.

Cricketing greats slammed Dhoni by Dinesh on 20 Mar 2008

I read cricketing greats comments on Dhoni. I say to them just shut up and enjoy the success young teams are bringing. People can react the way they want but this guy Dhoni and his young guns have T-20 world cup and CB series cup in their drawing rooms. How many team cups these seniors have? None. Even the great Tendulkar has no world cup of any kind to show.

Youngsters in Cricket by prabhakar rao on 20 Mar 2008

I agree with MS Dhoni. The seniors like Kumble, Sachin, Dravid, Ganguly and Laxman will not quit Cricket unless they are asked to quit. By the time they are asked to quit, the present bunch of talented youngsters will become old and they will not have a chance to play for the country. I suggest, a retirement limit for Cricket too should be enforced so that the talented youngsters can have a chance. How many catches Dravid has dropped, how manyh extra runs ganguly has given in One Dayers. It cannot be a monopoly of certain individuials. OLD Order changeth yielding place to new. Good Dhoni Like minded people like me will support you. Never mind if we lose one or two series. But let the youngsters get exposed to International cricket. When will they get if these seniors are stacking their places in the one dayers. Dhoni wiill also have to go once he becomes old.

Policy of Youth by peter on 20 Mar 2008

I think Dhoni would have been asked by the interviewer and Dhoni might have told this statement. Tendulkar played well in the finals. But Tendulkar's contribution to take India to final is remarkably less. Also with young legs, India's fielding was really better. The differentor is of course the bowling. Rohit sharma, Gambhir, Dhoni, Yuvi, and even uttappa all contributed notably. So only because of Tendulkar, India won the cup is too much. The young batsmen were not consistent and through experience in such kinds of competitive matches, they will gain the much needed maturity, longivity in the crease, adaptivity etc to take India to greater heights

Good bowling was the primary cause of series win by Krishna on 20 Mar 2008

India did well in Australia because of good bowling. Good bowling was never the case in the past. To say that we won because of keeping a couple of batsmen out is silly.

Hold on MSD by Abhishek Prasad on 20 Mar 2008

MSD needs to be a bit more cautious over coming to conclusions.Fine his young team won the series in Australia, but any concrete conclusion can be drawn only when his young team delivers results consistently. He should remember that during the initial phase of Dravid's captaincy, the team consisting of youngsters won 16/17 matches chasing on the trot, but everything changed post West Indies tour .Public memory is indeed short and Dhoni better watch out!!!

What Arrogance ! by Indian on 20 Mar 2008

One or Two bad series and Dhoni will get a test of his own medicine..He should show humility and personally some performance on the field. Just being a captain is not good enough.

Arrogance and Lack of humility by Sg Sak on 20 Mar 2008

Well,we know what these youngsters were accomplishing before the finals - just barely able to make it to finals with all Gods' grace. And in finals, without a senior player (who else, Sachin Tendulkar) they would have been humiliated.Dhoni talks as though they have planned out everything upfront and got them executed by clock steps. Viewers know that the truth is somewhere in between with lot of luck favoring us in the finals.Dhoni's lack of humility exposes his arrogance and immaturity.

Hold your horses captain!!! by E. Kaushik on 20 Mar 2008

It is all nice and happy in the Indian dressing room right now, given that we won the tri-series. Dhoni should understand that these same comments will come and hit him hard if the results do not come in. He should not even expect anyone to come to his aid then!! We had seen this with Ganguly and now Dhoni is treading the same dangerous path. I think diplomacy is a big part of being a good captain and he should make sure that he does not disturb the dressing room atmosphere. He still shares the dressing room with Dravid and Ganguly for the tests and these comments may just hurt him and India there!

Hold your horses captain!!! by Vicky on 20 Mar 2008

Dhoni is forgetting, one day he will also become old and will be humiliated the same way as he doing to other senior members. If this trend goes on.

Keep winning, that's the key by Raman on 20 Mar 2008

Dhoni seems a bit egoistic now. But he deserves it. I would say "Dhoni, do whatever you want with the team but keep winning the matches. That's what matters."
