Eight officials of WHO have started motivating people and volunteers to actively participate in the ongoing pulse polio drive.
The team has also suggested that the government health officials to pay special attention to selected areas that reported such cases in the past and organise special drives to ensure better vaccine coverage.
“We earlier believed that the virus has been was eliminated from the state, but this case has proven that the virus is still present and there is a need for active monitoring and proper coverage. We have selected some sensitive areas and have divided them among our five social mobilising officers. These officers will motivate people and monitor the programme in their respective areas,” said Dr Kamaljit Singh, sub-regional coordinator of the National Polio Surveillance Project of World Health Organisation.
He added: “We are trying to identify the gaps and at the same time assist the government in the vaccination.”
The officials are also looking into the possibility of this virus being imported, the samples have been sent for further tests. The sources say that in the next two weeks, it will be clear if the virus is from western Uttar Pradesh or has been imported from Bihar, which is still reporting P1 cases.
The state had not reported a single P1 case for last two months, but a child from Sultanpur, Yasmeen, reported positive for the wild Polio type 1 virus in the report of National Pulse Polio Surveillance Project released on December 28, 2007.
