According to police, Sridam Das (48), a resident of Tantipara in the Rainagar police station area, was travelling on a bicycle to Adam Primary School where he worked as a teacher.
The suspected Maoists stopped him and pumped five bullets in his body. He died on the spot. Later, he was rushed to Siuri hospital where he was declared brought dead. His brother, Sarat Das, however, blamed CPM infighting behind the murder.
In another incident, miscreants beat Sanaullah Sheikh, a Socialist party leader, to death. A resident of Sitalgram in Nalhati, Sanaullah was going to a local mosque to pray in the morning when miscreants beat him up with iron rods. He was rushed to Rampurhat sub-divisional hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.
His wife Mumtaz Bibi is a panchayat candidate this time. Subrata Dutta, district secretary of Socialist Party, blamed Congress.
Following the murder, Socialist Party workers blocked roads at various parts of Rampurhat and protested against police inaction.
“The CPM leader was on the hit list of the Maoists. Today he was shot dead. As for Sanaullah Sheikh we have received a complaint from his wife. But it does not specify any names. In both cases the bodies have been sent for a postmortem,” said LK Meena, district police superintendent of Birbhum.
