New Delhi The UPA government on Thursday cleared a scheme to build a million “affordable” houses across the country over four years to bridge the glaring gap in home-ownership and kick-start the sputtering economy. The scheme — to be notified next month — was cleared today, barely days before the Election Commission is expected to notify the elections and bring the code of conduct into effect.

A meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) gave the go-ahead for construction of a million houses in partnership with the private sector over the next four years.

The scheme, though targeted at housing for middle and low-income families, will also have 2.5 lakh houses for the

economically weaker section (EWS).

The houses will have a plinth area of 300-1,200 sq ft and will be sold at a pre-determined price that is expected to be lower than the market price. While states will release land for building such affordable houses, the Centre will fund 25 per cent of the total costs on external civic infrastructure such as roads and water supply. It has set aside Rs 5,000 crore for this purpose.

While any city can initiate a housing proposal under the scheme, the government is largely looking at cities with a population of over a million.

Apart from the private sector, state housing boards, employees’ welfare housing societies are expected to partner the government.

The scheme will also fuel applications for home loans at reduced interest rates, the note said.

Depraved persons by romesh.sharma on 27 Feb 2009

Its really disgusting and a cause of disgrace to the present polity for their deceptives ways to win elections. Why now? What have they done during almost five years of rule?Which way they helped to promote living standard of socalled common man(Aam-Aadmi)?These are cheap tricks to achieve popularity through notoriety and delusion are ancient old. but sad that people still fall into their nets. This is what one can say human exploitation and misuse of power. Moreover this and many earlier promised projects were left on the blue-prints.Once this corrupt Cong/UPA Govt is out who can ensure the projects will be carried out!Though all politicians do work for Party and gain more popularity but not by disheartening/disappointing the people who support them with precious votes. To me misleading illitrates and ignorants or say easily susceptibles is itself a crime of second degree.Shame to these power hungry merciless politicians.

false promises by petty politicians. by Siva Kumar on 27 Feb 2009

There should be some provision by which the the out going Govt.is restricted from making sops announcements for vooing the voters. The Govt. in normal case gets 5 years and during this time the politicians fill their coffer rather than doing anything worth for the public. And at the fag end of their period they start announsing the sops, bluffing and cheating the ignorent and illetrate Am admi. This must be stoped.

Help development in Towns and Villages by Deepak Bhatia on 27 Feb 2009

The government must provide for building homes and economy in the tier II and lower cities and towns and villages. This will ease pressure on the cities. But more importantly it will prevent break up of families, help them live dignified lives and keep their culture and live it. That can help India grow and live as India without aping the west.
