Islamabad, Feb 18 Initial results in Pakistan's general elections, marred by low voters' turn-out, today went against President Pervez Musharraf with three of his former ministers losing while opposition PPP and PML-N winning in their strongholds.

PML-Q leader Shujaat Hussain, who was Prime Minister under Musharraf, was deafeted by his PPP rival Choudhry Ahmed Mukhtar in the national assembly constituency in Punjab province.

Musharraf's confidante and high-profile former minister Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed, also of PML-Q, lost to PML-N leader Makhdoom Javed in a prestigious Rawalpindi constituency.

Rasheed, a seven-time winner from his constituency and a former railway minister in the Musharraf government, is also constesting for another Rawalpindi seat.

Zubaida Jalal, a former minister in Musharraf's cabinet, was defeated as an independent candidate for the National Assembly from Kech-Gwadar in southwestern Balochistan province by Yaqub Bizenjo of Balochistan National Party-Awami.

She was the education minister during 1999-2001.

Initial trends showed Pakistan People's Party (PPP) of its slain leader Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif's PML(N) doing well in their respective strongholds Sindh and Punjab respectively while Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) was faring well in Karachi as counting of votes was underway.

Sure signs of external control of terrorist-jhadi network, beside pakistani establishment by Azim MorarJi. on 19 Feb 2008

When the pakistani establishment under musharraf was secure, it became mother of taliban, and terror against India reached it's zenith. But, now there is a trend; whenever some really bad omens arise from pakistan, which may tilt the current balance, the jihadi-terrorists try to do something dramatic in India. Who is going to benefit this. It is not obvious. But, this for sure, seems to be desperate attempt by an independent network of terrorist-jihadis, who want to remain in lime light and show supreme control once things are actually slipping under their feet and they are not enjoying active support of establishment as ususal. This seems to be a SURE sign of another economic power controlling the jihadi network, as otherwise a country like pakistan, considered a beggar nation, can not ever afford to wage a proxy war, as this would ruin it and make it a pitiful destitute.

PAKISTAN ELECTIONS by NARAYANAN JAYARAMAN on 19 Feb 2008

the Slain leader Benazir Bhutto is well known for her inflammatory speeches on Kashmir, so her party will be no different. Though Democracy is wellcome in Pakistan under the current circumstances, Dictator Musharraf is a better bet for smoother relations with india than any leader in pakistan. India need not rejoice in a possible victory for PPP.

Only consolation will he have that those extremist will not take to Kandhar like those IC passangers!
